Bachmann eyes cuts to veterans health benefits | Raw Story

This woman is a very dangerous idiot.

I assume no one will take her seriously, but then, I also assumed that about Sarah Palin….

WASHINGTON – Tea party hero Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) this week proposed a blueprint to eliminate $400 billion from the federal budget, which included billions in cuts to veterans’ health care and disability benefits.

Her plan would freeze health care funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and slash $4.5 billion in disability benefits to military veterans.

Bachmann posted the document on her official Web site, calling the spending cuts “real and necessary” to avoid increasing the debt ceiling above $14.3 trillion. She supports the United States wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Oh hell no! In the middle of 2 wars?” remarked Paul Rieckhoff, a veterans advocate who served during the Iraq war, in a Twitter post echoed by dozens.

This lady needed to watch The Oprah show this past week. She had a veteran that had been injured by an IED. He is now blind and his family must care for him since has a severe brain injury. Another guest was the mom of a soldier that died in Iraq. Michelle Obama was also a guest as was Tom Brokaw. They are trying to elevate the public’s awareness of the state of the veteran that is returning from this war. Since I work for the VA Hospital, I see first hand what these guys are like. A lot of them are as young as my daughter who is 23 and they have psychological problems, not just physical ones. It makes me sick to hear this woman speak out against veteran’s benefits as she sits comfortably on her perch in the government. Sorry to rant but this type of behavior makes me very mad.

There is an underlying problem with the entire veteran disability compensation system. Combat veterans like the one on Oprah deserve everything they receive in disability benefits and more. The hidden truth is that a million or more veterans retire every year after serving 20 years in the military, having seen no combat action. However, hundreds of thousands of these veterans seek and receive 50% or greater disability ratings and receive not only thier retirement pension but also disability pay. How did they get that disabled in the Air Force or Navy, for example, if not in combat. Sure, some may have been involved in accidents while on duty and really be disabled to a large extent. But MOST of them are in as good or better shape than a typical 40’s-50’s civilian. For example, I have neighbors who both retired as non-commissioned officers from the Air Force. He ran restaurants and officers clubs during his career (no combat) and she was in logistics (no combat, flew a desk). He has knee pain (from what?) and she had carpal tunnel syndrome, which was fixed through surgery. They each are rated 70%+ disabled (you can tell by real estate tax exemption class in county appraisal district websites). He works on his feet all day at an auto parts store and she is now a teacher. But they still “take” over $2000 each month from federal taxpayers who would be laughed at by their private disability insurer if they tried to pull this off. There is no followup on the disability ratings of veterans to see if they are truly as “disabled” as their ratings pre-suppose. The government needs to cut this bulls*** out and give the extra $$ to combat disabled veterans.
