The Radicalization of Debbie Reynolds

This is one of the strangest things I’ve ever seen.  I’m kind of speechless.  Vintage Debbie Reynolds doing a protest song, “If I Had a Hammer” as a production number in the 1960’s.  This must be what the Right Wing means when they talk about Limousine Liberals….

Just for reference, here is Peter, Paul and Mary doing the same song at the March on Washington for Civil Rights in 1963.  Two different worlds at around the same time…think about it.

  1. Debbie Reynolds! Love all that stuff from the 60’s. Reminds me of going to the Empire Room at the Palmer House in Chicago. All the big acts with big production. Don’t see anything like this anymore.

And by the way, I’m one of the last of the limousine liberals, but I gave up the limo in favor of a minivan. Carries more bike stuff.

scopopitones!! Love it ! Debbies’s version was restrained, I was expecting tap dancing and hammers festooned with ribbons.

  4. That’s one of the best drag shows I’ve seen in years.

    I miss the swanky sixties.

And one of MY deep dark secrets is that, sitting at home in the 60s, I was a rather typical suburban housewife, watching (and enjoying!) the Debbie Reynolds, MGM productions and paying only lip service to the ideas embodied in Peter, Paul and Mary’s song. For years I have regretted that I didn’t do more.
