Workers Lose Thanksgiving As Stores Extend Black Friday Shopping

This just infuriates me….

Let me qualify my comments by saying that, even though I do consider recreational shopping a legitimate sport, there are limits.   It does seem we should be able to stop for a couple of days a year…

Hell would freeze over before I would leave my house to join this fracas. It’s always struck me as a kind of like Christians vs Lions in the Roman Coliseum type thing.  But there is nothing Christian about this…And I’m sure these shoppers probably see themselves more as gladiators.

This is the height of inconsideration.  These poor workers, who aren’t making any money to begin with, will have to give up their Thanksgiving so Americans can buy more crap they don’t need so stores can make more money to pay a few top executives ridiculous salaries for failing…

I always thought Thanksgiving was a day to stop and spend time with people you care about and reflect on your blessings…and eat a lot of things you really shouldn’t eat.

Not a day to run over some stranger for a DVD  player or TV you could probably order just as cheaply, or cheaper, on-line….

Get a grip, people…..

Come join my Black Friday Boycott…..

From ThinkProgress.org:

In the race for holiday season profits, stores are moving up their hours for the biggest shopping day of the year to cut into the Thanksgiving holiday. One of the more aggressive companies is Kmart, which will keep its stores open at 6 a.m on Thanksgiving, although Macy’s, Kohl’s, and others have also bumped up their hours.

Kmart and its defenders point to the fact that no one is being forced to work on Thanksgiving and stores will be staffed mostly with seasonal hires. However, the reality is that few workers have much of an option when it comes to holiday scheduling, both because the U.S. lacks benefits like guaranteed paid vacation and the reliance on a temp or part-time workforce is growing.

A Global Wine Shortage May Soon Be Upon Us

Oh, my God!  This is a serious crisis!

Forget the “Financial Crisis” and unemployment, World governments must come together to address this issue.  They should be planning a conference at the United Nations….

I would hate to have to change over to beer or hard liquor….

Or, god forbid, quite drinking…

From the HuffingtonPost.com:

Last year, global supply for wine already barely exceeded demand. Adjusting the demand to include non-wine uses (such as making vermouth), there was actually an undersupply of about 300 million cases, marking the largest such shortfall in almost 50 years.

At the current pace, a global shortage of wine is fast approaching. “Data suggests there may be insufficient supply to meet demand in coming years, as current vintages are released,” the report says.

NBC To Resurrect ‘Murder, She Wrote’ with Octavia Spencer

Now, I love Octavia Spencer and she’s an excellent actress, but this just screams “hot mess”.

What ever happened to new ideas?

And Angela Lansbury is only 88 and doing 8 shows a week on Broadway as recently as the last year or so, so I’m not sure she is ready to give this role up.  She may have been planning some specials or movies or something over the next few years….

From Variety:

Turns out, you can’t kill “Murder, She Wrote.”

NBC is reviving the onetime Universal TV series that aired for years on CBS, placing Octavia Spencer in the starring role once held by Angela Lansbury and giving the project a put pilot committment.

David Janollari and Alexandra Cunningham (“Desperate Housewives”) will exec produce the drama, which will aim for a light, contemporary feel, according to NBC. Spencer will play the hospital administrator and amateur sleuth who self-publishes her first mystery novel, then becomes an active participant in true crime investigations.

Sondheim Working on a Revised Version of ‘Company’

My first reaction was:  “Oh god, not yet another production of “Company”.  Then I read more….

This is intriguing….and with great people attached.

And I always thought Bobby was Gay anyway…

From the New York Times today…

The acclaimed composer Stephen Sondheim and the Tony Award-winning director John Tiffany (“Once”) are collaborating on a major revision of Mr. Sondheim’s celebrated 1970 musical “Company,” a project that Roundabout Theater Company is eyeing for a possible production, according to Mr. Sondheim and others involved.

The biggest change in this new “Company” would be the central character of Bobby. Whereas he has always been a straight man struggling with commitment issues and multiple girlfriends, he has been reconceived by Mr. Tiffany as a gay man with commitment issues and multiple boyfriends. And some characters have had gender reversals; the character of Joanne, who sings “The Ladies Who Lunch” and was originally played by Elaine Stritch on Broadway, is being played by the Tony winner Alan Cumming (“Cabaret”) in Mr. Tiffany’s reading of the work at Roundabout this week.

For years Mr. Sondheim and the musical’s book writer, George Furth, who died in 2008, batted back suggestions that Bobby was furtively intended to be a closeted gay man. But when Mr. Tiffany proposed actually making Bobby gay, Mr. Sondheim said in a telephone interview on Tuesday, the idea intrigued him.

“It’s still a musical about commitment, but marriage is seen as something very different in 2013 than it was in 1970,” Mr. Sondheim said. “We don’t deal with gay marriage as such, but this version lets us explore the issues of commitment in a fresh way.”

Men’s Bikini Wax Preference? NOT A Brazilian, Poll Finds

Way TMI….

From the “I’m glad I’m Gay” files….

And I have enough close women friends to know some of them spend way too much time worrying about this…..

From the HuffingtonPost.com….

Raise your hand if you’ve ever gotten a bikini wax.

Now raise your hand if you’ve ever gotten a bikini wax simply because you thought that’s what guys wanted.

If you’ve got that hand in the air, we’ve got some good news: That guy might not care as much about your bikini line as you thought. Or he does care, but a full-on Brazilian wax might not be necessary. A new study commissioned by hair removal company Nad’s surveyed 1,000 men and found that their most preferred “look” was not a Brazilian, but rather “‘trimmed and tidy’ –- a well kept ‘lady garden.'”

43 percent of men polled said they preferred women’s hair natural with a “Bermuda triangle” (i.e. trimmed hair and waxed sides). 17 percent said they like a “landing strip,” 15 percent dig a heart shape, and only 12 percent said they prefer a full-on Brazilian (no hair at all).

Freddie Mercury Snuck Princess Diana Into A Gay Bar Dressed In Drag

More reasons to love both the late Freddie Mercury and the late Princess Diana….

From HuffingtonPost.com:

According to a new book, Queen Legend Freddie Mercury snuck Princess Diana into a notorious gay bar in the late 1980s — and the beloved royal went unnoticed.

In “The Power of Positive Drinking,” comedian Cleo Rocos writes about how she, TV star Kenny Everett and Mercury disguised Princess Diana as a male model so that she could sneak into the Royal Vauxhall Tavern in south London. Dressed in an army jacket, black cap and sunglasses, Diana enjoyed a night out on the town, free of attention.

“When we walked in … we felt she was obviously Princess Diana and would be discovered at any minute. But people just seemed to blank her. She sort of disappeared. But she loved it,” Rocos says, adding that the venue was packed, but the presence of Mercury, Everett and herself helped divert attention from Diana so that she could order drinks at the bar. The group left after about 20 minutes.

“She did look like a beautiful young man,” Rocos explains. “She was always a very fit girl, so they might have thought, ‘There’s a nice young man with pert buttocks.'”

Merry Christmas, I mean Easter, from Maria Shriver

I’m glad to know there is someone taking longer to take down their Christmas Lights than us.   We didn’t get the chance, due to weather and schedules to take ours down until late January.

I don’t quite see Maria Shriver hanging her own lights, so she really has no excuse- unless she’s too cheap to pay the Help to take them down….

At this point, she might as well just leave them up and turn them all year.  Maybe that is her intent…..

Maybe she is trying to be too politically correct and just considers them Holiday Lights and means to use them for all Holidays all year long…..

From TMZ.com:

On the 94th day of Christmas … MARIA SHRIVER STILL HASN’T TAKEN DOWN HER CHRISTMAS LIGHTS … and her Brentwood neighbors are starting to go all Ebenezer Scrooge … TMZ has learned.

Sources in Maria’s super fancy Brentwood community tell TMZ, the neighbors have been clucking about Maria’s ultra-bright Xmas light display for weeks now … because Christmas is long over, and the lights on the trees around her property have become an eyesore.

In fact, TMZ shot video (below) on Maria’s street Tuesday night … and her house was the ONLY ONE still sportin’ the Clark Griswold treatment.

We’re told the neighbors haven’t approached Maria directly yet because they like her and don’t want to hurt her feelings … but in typical passive aggressive neighborly fashion, they’re hoping word will make its way back to her.

If not … she can just keep the decorations up until December — after all, it’s only another 271 days until Santa comes back to town.

The Devil Didn’t Wear Prada Unless Diana Vreeland Told Her To….

Before “The Devil Wears Prada”, there was Diana Vreeland at Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue…

She was truly a unforgetable character….

There is a new documentary just out about her called :  Diana Vreeland:  The Eye Has To Travel”.

And, of course, she was the inspiration for Kay Thompson’s character in “Funny Face”

An American original…..

I can only imagine what she would have had to say about “Christian Fashion Week”….

She may be gone now, but she is not forgotten.

And she has a website:  http://www.dianavreeland.com

Was Jackie Kennedy Really Our First “Black” First Lady?

If you go by the old Southern “One Drop Rule”, she just may have been!

Of course, if you applied the One Drop Rule, meaning even one Black ancestor or one drop of “Black Blood” makes you Black, there would be a lot of Klansmen committing suicide.  Not that that’s a bad thing….

Still, I think of Jackie as more like Ava Gardner in “Show Boat.”  Not really Black, but now being asked to play the part….

But it’s all open to debate.

Oh, by the way, this standard also means Anderson Cooper is Black.

Anyway, this is part of a fascinating article at AlterNet.org about unknown facts for Black History Month.

Jackie O, perhaps America’s most emulated and admired First Lady, descended from a family known as the van Salee’s, who were described as “mulatto” in the 17th century. This family traced its lineage in part to a Dutch mariner named Jan Jensen, who turned Turk (what some Europeans called “going native”), which was more popular than common history reveals.

It is widely believed Jensen fathered two children, Anthony and Abraham van Salee, by a Moorish concubine. Following a dispute with his white wife, Anthony van Salee was exiled to territory across the river, where he became Brooklyn’s first settler. Until a few decades ago, this property adjoining Coney Island was called Turk’s Island after Anthony van Salle — the term “Turk,” in his day being synonymous with Moor (North African). A descendant, John van Salee De Grasse, born in 1825, was the first black American formally educated as a doctor. When Jackie Kennedy was asked about her van Salee roots during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, she called her ancestors “Jewish.” Of course, her socialite father, born in 1891, was nicknamed “Black Jack” Bouvier for his swarthy complexion. In the 1960s, journalists described the First Lady’s features as “French,” earning her the cover page of countless magazines, including film and fan publications. Not only Kennedy Onassis, but well-borns Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Vanderbilt (and thus Anderson Cooper), are van Salee descendants.
