NC GOPer and “Daily Show” Guest Resigns after Criticizing ‘Lazy Black People’

Well, that didn’t take long….

See my post from earlier today about Voter ID and the return of Jesse Helms.

Yep, this is the guy…..

The GOP hates it when someone is honest about their goals and opinions.  You aren’t supposed to see the “man behind the curtain.”

And tell me again all this modern Tea Party nonsense isn’t just repackaged racism with these folks mad as hell a Black man is in the White House.

Like I said, we aren’t supposed to see behind the curtain..

From TalkingPointsMemo.com via WRAL:

A Republican precinct chairman in North Carolina was asked to resign Thursday after making racially inflammatory comments during a ‘Daily Show’ interview on Wednesday, WRAL reported.

Buncombe GOP Chair Henry Mitchell said Don Yelton resigned for making remarks that were “offensive, uniformed and unacceptable of any member within the Republican Party.”

In an interview centered on North Carolina’s voter ID law conducted by the Daily Show’s Aasif Mandvi, Yelton criticized “lazy black people that wants the government to give them everything.”

“The bottom line is the law is not racist,” Yelton said.

“Of course the law isn’t racist, and you’re not racist,” Mandvi responded.

“Well,” Yelton paused. “I’ve been called a bigot before. Let me tell you something, you don’t look like me but I think I’ve treated you the same as anybody else. As a matter of fact, one of my best friends is black. One of my best friends.”

“When I was a young man you didn’t call a black a black,” he added later. “You called him a negro.”

NC Voter ID Laws and the Return of Jesse Helms

These people just aren’t very bright, but they are exceedingly mean.

The best way to defeat the GOP might just be to put them all on TV all the time….

The Republicans only get into trouble when they leave the Fox News bubble and venture out into the smarter, more modern real world…

You know, to places like “The Daily Show”.

Well, that’s what happened last night when NC Republican Executive Committee Member Don Yelton did his best to channel the late Jesse Helms on “The Daily Show.”

I want to say it’s unbelievable, but we passed that threshold a long time ago…

And at least he’s an honest bigot…..

Here is the link to the complete “The Daily Show” segment.  See for yourself….

Forward Together, Not One Step Back

In light of the passage of the horrible new voting restrictions, I urge you to take 15 minutes to watch this fascinating documentary on the history of Voting Rights and Voter Suppression in North Carolina.

I learned a lot of North Carolina History I did not know and saw so many historical parallels to what the Conservatives are trying to do in North Carolina and other states today.

This may be the best use of 15 minutes you’ll have all weekend.

Black Voter Turnout Surpassed Whites in 2012

This is one of , if not the main reason the GOP is trying so hard to limit voting by passing Voter ID Laws, limiting early voting and gerrymandering districts…

And the challenge for the Democrats is to still drive this level of participation when President Obama is not on the ticket….

From Taegan Roberts Political Wire:

“America’s blacks voted at a higher rate than other minority groups in 2012 and by most measures surpassed the white turnout for the first time, reflecting a deeply polarized presidential election in which blacks strongly supported Barack Obama while many whites stayed home,” the AP reports.

“Had people voted last November at the same rates they did in 2004, when black turnout was below its current historic levels, Republican Mitt Romney would have won narrowly.”

Rand Paul “Educates” Black People…And Proves He’s An Ignorant, Elitist, Entitled White Man- Again…..

Rand Paul is truly an idiot….

People just didn’t realize it in time to prevent him from becoming a Senator….

The good news is, the Peter Principle has kicked in:  He has reached- and surpassed- his level of incompetence….

And he’s illustrating it on the national stage….

From ThinkProgress.org:

On Wednesday morning, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) gave an address at the historically-black Howard University designed to convince black voters to support Republicans. While some of his remarks, most notably on harsh drug laws and other civil liberties issues, were well-received, the majority of the speech consisted in Paul condescendingly explaining American racial history to the audience, occasionally incorrectly, and expecting that it would open black voters’ eyes to the real Republican Party. Here are five moments that encapsulated the general problem with Paul’s speech:

Pat Robertson Blames Ivy League Schools For Lack Of Miracles In America

Well, they don’t get much simpler or crazier than Pat but he sure isn’t humble….

He thinks Americans should be “simple” and “humble” like Africans so we would believe in Miracles.

This is a) racist and b) stupid.

He’s really saying only the ignorant can be fooled into believing in miracles….

Or, in my mind, in the Republican Party and Televangelists….

Those guys count on ignorance….

And of course he knows nothing about the complexity and history of Africa.

He’s commenting from his own ignorant, Old South Plantation Era mindset…

It may have been April 1st yesterday, but televangelist Pat Robertson wasn’t kidding when he told a viewer that Americans aren’t experiencing God’s miracles because they are too “sophisticated.”

Why do miracles “happen with great frequency in Africa, and not here in the USA?” asked a 700 Club patron Ken. “People overseas didn’t go to Ivy League schools,” Robertson replied with a chuckle.

“We are so sophisticated, we think we’ve got everything figured out,” the Christian Broadcasting Network chairman continued. “We know about evolution, we know about Darwin, we know about all these things that says God isn’t real, we know about all this stuff.”

According to Robertson, it’s the “skepticism and secularism” that is being taught at “the most advanced schools” around the country that is keeping God’s miracles at bay.

Meanwhile, Africans are “simple” and “humble.” “You tell ‘em God loves ‘em and they say, ‘Okay, he loves me’,” said Robertson. “You say God will do miracles and they say, ‘Okay, we believe him’.”

If Americans wish to experience more miracle, Robertson concluded, they must reject their miracle-negating sophistication in favor of the more credulous African way of life.

NC Legislators Propose More Rigorous Divorce Regulations

The North Carolina GOP has really been busy this week….

Busy trying to piss off as many people as possible….

So far, they’ve introduced legislation to establish a State Religion and ignore the Constitution, to block Student voters, to repeal racial justice legislation, privatize medicaid and now…

They want to make it more difficult to get a divorce in North Carolina.

See, they have something for everyone!  Not just Gay people, Black people, Young people….Everyone!

Who do they think is going to be left who is not too pissed off to vote for them?

As I’ve said before, it takes a rare kind of ineptitude for the Dems not to be able to defeat this crew of crazies….

From the Raleigh News and Observer….

A pair of Republican lawmakers want to make it harder to get a divorce in North Carolina by making estranged couples wait longer and go to counseling.

The Healthy Marriage Act would extend to two years the current one-year waiting period in order for a divorce to be finalized. During that time, the couple would have to complete courses on improving their communications skills and conflict resolution.

If the couple has children, they would have to take at least a four-hour class on the impact of divorce on children.

Veteran Sen. Austin Allran of Hickory is the primary sponsor. Second term Sen. Warren Daniel of Morganton has signed on to Senate Bill 518.

Separated couples could resume living together during the two-year waiting period, under the bill. Either the husband or the wife would have to have lived in North Carolina for six months before filing for divorce.

It would also strike from the current law a provision that says “isolated incidents of sexual intercourse” don’t count against the one-year waiting period. It’s not clear if that means an occasional fling with your estranged partner does count against you under the proposed law.

Black/White Wealth Gap Triples Since 1984

Contrary to what the Right Wing, the Tea Party, the Republican Party and certain Supreme Court Justices may think, just because we have twice-elected an African-American President does not mean racism and it’s long-term impacts are a thing of the past.

Very disturbing- really shocking- news from this new study….

This really shows how hard it is for minorities, not just Blacks, but also Hispanics and Asians,  to move ahead in America.  This is especially true if you look deeper at some of the drivers of income disparity such,  as  less inherited wealth and homeownership rates and home values resulting from segregated neighborhoods.  It’s not just coming from the expected sources of income/education disparity and unemployment….

From MSNBC (emphasis mine):

The racial wealth gap between blacks and whites has increased by $152,000 in the past 25 years, according to a new study [PDF] from Brandeis University’s Institute on Assets and Social Policy. The median wealth of white families has shot up precipitously since 1984, while the median wealth of black families has barely moved.

“Tracing the same households during that period, the total wealth gap between white and African-American families nearly triples, increasing from $85,000 in 1984 to $236,500 in 2009,” write the authors of the report. The chief driver of the inequality increase, they write, was disparities in homeownership, with household income arriving in second and unemployment in third.

White households were found to benefit disproportionately from average income increases, and residential segregation was said to be a major reason for inequality in homeownership. Additionally, “whites received about ten times more wealth than African-Americans” among those earning an inheritance.

“Our analysis found little evidence to support common perceptions about what underlies the ability to build wealth, including the notion that personal attributes and behavioral choices are key pieces of the equation,” they write. “Instead, the evidence points to policy and the configuration of both opportunities and barriers in workplaces, schools, and communities that reinforce deeply entrenched racial dynamics in how wealth is accumulated and that continue to permeate the most important spheres of everyday life.”

via Study: Black/white wealth inequality has exploded since ’80s — MSNBC.

From the Washington Post:

The large and growing wealth gap separating white and black families is the product of stubborn barriers that disproportionately consign African Americans to less-valuable real estate and lower-paying jobs, according to a new study.

A long-term examination of the financial lives of black and white Americans revealed that African Americans typically face a subtle but persistent opportunity gap that has served to widen financial disparities remaining from a long history of overt discrimination, according to a report to be released Wednesday by Brandeis University’s Institute on Assets and Social Policy.

Was Jackie Kennedy Really Our First “Black” First Lady?

If you go by the old Southern “One Drop Rule”, she just may have been!

Of course, if you applied the One Drop Rule, meaning even one Black ancestor or one drop of “Black Blood” makes you Black, there would be a lot of Klansmen committing suicide.  Not that that’s a bad thing….

Still, I think of Jackie as more like Ava Gardner in “Show Boat.”  Not really Black, but now being asked to play the part….

But it’s all open to debate.

Oh, by the way, this standard also means Anderson Cooper is Black.

Anyway, this is part of a fascinating article at AlterNet.org about unknown facts for Black History Month.

Jackie O, perhaps America’s most emulated and admired First Lady, descended from a family known as the van Salee’s, who were described as “mulatto” in the 17th century. This family traced its lineage in part to a Dutch mariner named Jan Jensen, who turned Turk (what some Europeans called “going native”), which was more popular than common history reveals.

It is widely believed Jensen fathered two children, Anthony and Abraham van Salee, by a Moorish concubine. Following a dispute with his white wife, Anthony van Salee was exiled to territory across the river, where he became Brooklyn’s first settler. Until a few decades ago, this property adjoining Coney Island was called Turk’s Island after Anthony van Salle — the term “Turk,” in his day being synonymous with Moor (North African). A descendant, John van Salee De Grasse, born in 1825, was the first black American formally educated as a doctor. When Jackie Kennedy was asked about her van Salee roots during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, she called her ancestors “Jewish.” Of course, her socialite father, born in 1891, was nicknamed “Black Jack” Bouvier for his swarthy complexion. In the 1960s, journalists described the First Lady’s features as “French,” earning her the cover page of countless magazines, including film and fan publications. Not only Kennedy Onassis, but well-borns Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Vanderbilt (and thus Anderson Cooper), are van Salee descendants.

How the GOP Is Resegregating the South

Folks may or may not remember Nixon introduced the Southern Strategy that the Republicans have used ever since to win the presidency.

President Obama’s victories in North Carolina and Virginia threatened the continued validity of that strategy.  Until the GOP took control of the North Carolina State House and expanded their control in the rest of the South.

Their goal is to leverage Redistricting to isolate Black Voters into as few districts as possible to increase the odds of the GOP winning the others.

Now they are digging in and trying to leverage Race to make the Southern Strategy work for at least another generation…

It’s really reprehensible and very obvious.  Especially here in North Carolina….

Here is an excerpt from a great article in The Nation by Ari Berman that explains this exceedingly well.  I encourage you to click the link at the bottom and read the entire article.

(Hat tip to Daily Kos where I first saw this….)

“What’s uniform across the South is that Republicans are using race as a central basis in drawing districts for partisan advantage,” says Anita Earls, a prominent civil rights lawyer and executive director of the Durham-based Southern Coalition for Social Justice. “The bigger picture is to ultimately make the Democratic Party in the South be represented only by people of color.” The GOP’s long-term goal is to enshrine a system of racially polarized voting that will make it harder for Democrats to win races on local, state, federal and presidential levels. Four years after the election of Barack Obama, which offered the promise of a new day of postracial politics in states like North Carolina, Republicans are once again employing a Southern Strategy that would make Richard Nixon and Lee Atwater proud.

The consequences of redistricting in North Carolina—one of the most important swing states in the country—could determine who controls Congress and the presidency in 2012. Democrats hold seven of the state’s thirteen Congressional seats, but after redistricting they could control only three—the largest shift for Republicans at the Congressional level in any state this year. Though Obama won eight of the thirteen districts, under the new maps his vote would be contained in only three heavily Democratic districts—all of which would have voted 68 percent or higher for the president in 2008—while the rest of the districts would have favored John McCain by 55 percent or more. “GOP candidates could win just over half of the statewide vote for Congress and end up with 62 percent to 77 percent of the seats,” found John Hood, president of the conservative John Locke Foundation.
