Scottish Separatism: The United Kingdom Nearly Died for Maggies Sins

The vote for Scotland to leave the UK, which barely failed to pass, kind of snuck up on me and I haven’t had the chance to really dig into.  I do find it fascinating….

There is a great article on the Huffington Post by Robert Kuttner that I’m finding to be a great place to start.

Here is a brief excerpt and a link to the full article.

Now commentators all across the spectrum are pronouncing that the old United Kingdom is as good as dead. The independence referendum failed, but in order to placate the Scots, London will have to concede far more regional autonomy. The regional parliaments of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will gain far more power, leaving the awkward question of whether little England should get its own parliament too.

The Brits can thank Maggie Thatcher for all that. It was Thatcher who set the U.K. onto a course where British extremes of inequality rival those of the United States, and where valued public institutions are being tossed on the rubbish heap. It was policies set in motion by Thatcher and her successors that finally promoted the Scottish revolt.

Forward Together, Not One Step Back

In light of the passage of the horrible new voting restrictions, I urge you to take 15 minutes to watch this fascinating documentary on the history of Voting Rights and Voter Suppression in North Carolina.

I learned a lot of North Carolina History I did not know and saw so many historical parallels to what the Conservatives are trying to do in North Carolina and other states today.

This may be the best use of 15 minutes you’ll have all weekend.

Study Links Low I.Q. To Prejudice, Racism, Conservatism

I am not at all surprised….

In fact, this just reinforces what I already thought and observed through life experiences….

And the elected Republicans and GOP base certainly down play and belittle science and education….

They are playing to their audience and reinforcing their fears and prejudices to get elected….

So they can take care of their rich friends and Corporations….

The only other reason people are “conservative” is the when the Rich are trying to preserve their wealth!

From the Huffington Post:

The study, published in Psychological Science, showed that people who score low on I.Q. tests in childhood are more likely to develop prejudiced beliefs and socially conservative politics in adulthood.

I.Q., or intelligence quotient, is a score determined by standardized tests, but whether the tests truly reveal intelligence remains a topic of hot debate among psychologists.

Dr. Gordon Hodson, a professor of psychology at the university and the study’s lead author, said the finding represented evidence of a vicious cycle: People of low intelligence gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, which stress resistance to change and, in turn, prejudice, he told LiveScience.

Why might less intelligent people be drawn to conservative ideologies? Because such ideologies feature “structure and order” that make it easier to comprehend a complicated world, Dodson said. “Unfortunately, many of these features can also contribute to prejudice,” he added.

Dr. Brian Nosek, a University of Virginia psychologist, echoed those sentiments.

“Reality is complicated and messy,” he told The Huffington Post in an email. “Ideologies get rid of the messiness and impose a simpler solution. So, it may not be surprising that people with less cognitive capacity will be attracted to simplifying ideologies.”

Political Divisions Between Conservatives, Liberals Have a Genetic Basis

I’ve said this many times:  Conservatives look backwards with fear, while Progressive/Liberals look forward with hope.

Now there seems to be scientific evidence to back up my observations.

All I can say is, if it is Genetic and they can’t help themselves, I will try to be more understanding and accepting….

To do so, all I ask is that they accept the same Genetic basis for homosexuality and be equally as understanding and accepting…

Seems fair to me….

I encourage you to click the link and read the entire article from The Huffington Post:

If you walk away from holiday dinners fuming that conservative Uncle Morton just can’t see your point of view, or that liberal Aunt Betty just doesn’t get it, a new finding may make it easier to cool your jets. According to the study, conservatives and liberals pay attention to their environments differently, meaning the two sides of the political spectrum quite literally don’t see eye-to-eye.

Conservatives pay more attention to negative stimuli compared with liberals, the study found.

“They’re essentially monitoring things that make them feel uncomfortable, which does feel fairly consistent with conservative policies, actually,” study researcher Mike Dodd, a psychologist at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, told LiveScience. “They tend to confront things head-on that they view as threats, things like immigration and so on.” [10 Significant Political Protests]

Dodd was quick to note that the kind of stimuli a person pays more attention to does not make them better or worse than someone of another political persuasion. But the findings could suggest a biological basis for political views.

“Based on your biology, you might be experiencing and processing something in a fundamentally different way from someone else,” Dodd said.

Rush Limbaugh: The Heat Wave Sweeping America Is A Government Conspiracy

You would think it would be impossible to be surprised by this guy’s ignorance, gall and paranoia by now, but this is kind of stunning….

From PoliticsUSA

According to Limbaugh, the heat wave is all part of giant government conspiracy to make people think that it is hotter than what it is in order to get them to believe that climate change is real. Limbaugh thinks this kind of heat wave happens every year, but it doesn’t. According to the National Weather Service 1,000 heat records have been broken across the United States in the past month.

Married Couples in less than Half of US Households

When are people going to finally face the fact that the “Ozzie and Harriet”, “Father Knows Best”, “Leave it to Beaver” world is gone?

If it ever existed in the first place…

The Conservatives keep harping on Family Values, but I always ask “Whose Family?”

My family of two Gay Men, a dog and two cats?  A family of 2 twentysomethings too financially insecure to think about a house and kids?  A family led by a single mother with children she has to feed, clothe and take care of alone?  A family of two women with children?  A family of one elderly American living alone?

Let’s get real here….

If you are going to talk about Family Values, it’s time to think about what a Family really is….

There are many kinds of Families…

Not all are what some  political Conservatives with an agenda want to force a Family to be…

Three mornings a week, when Becky Leung gets ready for work, her boyfriend is just getting home from his overnight job. When her mother drops hints about her twin sister’s marriage, she laughs it off. And when she thinks about getting married herself, she worries first about her career.

Leung, 27, cohabits in a Portland, Ore., townhome with her boyfriend but has no plans yet to wed, a reflection of the broader cultural shift in the U.S. away from the traditional definition of what it means to be a household.

Data released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau shows married couples have found themselves in a new position: They’re no longer the majority.

It’s a trend that’s been creeping along for decades, but in the 2010 Census, married couples represent 48 percent of all households. That’s down from 52 percent in the last Census and, for the first time in U.S. history, puts households led by married couples as a plurality.

The REAL Rapture Comes On October 21

This gives him a little more time to fundraise and milk publicity…

From News One:

Harold Camping, the preacher who incorrectly predicted that the world would end on May 21st 2011, is now claiming that the false doomsday was merely a warning, and that the end will in fact come on October 21st 2011.

“We’ve always said May 21 was the day, but we didn’t understand altogether the spiritual meaning,” the persistent leader stated during a 90 minute message.

Camping, who incorrectly predicted the world to end back in 1994, says he will no longer post billboards and messages about Judgment Day.

“The world has been warned,” he said. “We don’t have to talk about this anymore.”

Reclaiming the Politics of Freedom | The Nation

Another great article from The Nation…

The Conservatives really are PR geniuses.  They also have Street Smarts.

The Democrats have to look to history to frame their arguments in ways that have worked before.  This article has some good advice….

They also have to get over their fear of the GOP yelling “class warfare.”  The Class War is already on and the Middle Class is losing….

We must also change the argument about government. Government need not be a source of constraint, as conservatives claim. Nor is it designed to protect citizens from the vagaries of the market, as many liberals claim—a formulation that depicts citizens as needy and passive and opens liberals to the charge of paternalism and condescension. When government is aligned with democratic movements on the ground, as Walter Reuther and Martin Luther King Jr. understood, it becomes the individual’s instrument for liberating herself from her rulers in the private sphere, a way to break the back of private autocracy.

In forging his realignment, Roosevelt was careful to identify the enemy not as a political party but an economic aristocracy. Throughout the 1936 campaign, he barely mentioned Alf Landon. Instead, he denounced the Liberty League and the businessmen it represented. Realignments in America are like that: Jackson railed against the Bank; the Republicans ran against the slaveocracy; Reagan campaigned against the liberal elite. Part of this is strategic: it’s easier to peel away voters from the opposition if you can show that it is not their party you oppose but the interests it represents, which are not theirs. But part of it is substantive, reflecting a conviction that the task at hand is not simply to defeat a party or win an election but to free men and women from a malignant social form. If we hope to forge a comparable realignment, we must stop talking about the Tea Party or even the Republicans and start talking about the business class that stands behind them.

Shock poll: 46% of Mississippi Republicans think interracial marriage should be illegal | The Raw Story

I hope some time in my lifetime, Mississippi steps forward to at least join the 20th Century.  They’ve been stuck in the 19th Century for over 200 years now…

A new poll out of Mississippi finds that in a bastion of America’s south, many Republican voters have tightly held onto the old, hateful views of race as a dividing line in society.

A full 46 percent of Mississippi Republicans said they believe interracial marriage should be illegal, according to the left-leaning survey group Public Policy Polling. Only 40 percent said they thought it should remain legal, with the rest unsure.

Republicans who said they were in favor of banning interracial marriages were most frequently supporters of Fox News contributor Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor (R) who quit half-way through her first term. Their least liked candidate was Mitt Romney, the former radio executive and Governor of Massachusetts (R).

Brain structure differs in liberals, conservatives: study | The Raw Story

Well, I always knew I never really thought like a Conservative and now I know why…

I’ve always analyzed and dissected complex issues instead of going for the easy solutions….

I question everything.  I always have…

Fear isn’t something I consciously use in my decision but it’s clear the GOP uses it to drive and fire up their Conservative base…

Fascinating article from Raw Story:

WASHINGTON — Everyone knows that liberals and conservatives butt heads when it comes to world views, but scientists have now shown that their brains are actually built differently.

Liberals have more gray matter in a part of the brain associated with understanding complexity, while the conservative brain is bigger in the section related to processing fear, said the study on Thursday in Current Biology.

“We found that greater liberalism was associated with increased gray matter volume in the anterior cingulate cortex, whereas greater conservatism was associated with increased volume of the right amygdala,” the study said.

Other research has shown greater brain activity in those areas, according to which political views a person holds, but this is the first study to show a physical difference in size in the same regions.

“Previously, some psychological traits were known to be predictive of an individual’s political orientation,” said Ryota Kanai of the University College London, where the research took place.

“Our study now links such personality traits with specific brain structure.”

The study was based on 90 “healthy young adults” who reported their political views on a scale of one to five from very liberal to very conservative, then agreed to have their brains scanned.

People with a large amygdala are “more sensitive to disgust” and tend to “respond to threatening situations with more aggression than do liberals and are more sensitive to threatening facial expressions,” the study said.

Liberals are linked to larger anterior cingulate cortexes, a region that “monitor(s) uncertainty and conflicts,” it said.

“Thus, it is conceivable that individuals with a larger ACC have a higher capacity to tolerate uncertainty and conflicts, allowing them to accept more liberal views.”

It remains unclear whether the structural differences cause the divergence in political views, or are the effect of them.

But the central issue in determining political views appears to revolve around fear and how it affects a person.

“Our findings are consistent with the proposal that political orientation is associated with psychological processes for managing fear and uncertainty,” the study said.
