Secretariat’s Gallop into Greatness, Movie Fame has W&L Tie – Roanoke.com

I saw this on my alma mater, W&L’s,website earlier today…

And I’ll never forget going to the Kentucky Derby with my Washington and Lee friends in 1978 when Secretariat was still a vivid, recent memory….

He was one of the greatest sports stars to ever come out of the commonwealth.

He is the subject of a new movie starring Diane Lane and John Malkovich.

He is a horse.

The 1973 winner of the Triple Crown will jump from the pages of history to the multiplex when the Walt Disney Pictures film “Secretariat” opens across the country Friday, giving folks the chance to learn — or be reminded — of the Virginia roots of both the famed horse and the family who owned him.

Secretariat was born at The Meadow, a Caroline County horse farm founded by Washington and Lee University graduate Christopher Chenery. Secretariat, who lived and trained for two years at The Meadow, won the Triple Crown in blue-and-white racing silks — the school colors of Chenery’s alma mater.

Julie Andrews: “Whistling Away the Dark”

Julie Andrews singing a Henry Mancini  and Johnny Mercer song…

I remember loving this song the first time I heard it…

It’s from the 1970 film “Darling Lily” with Julie and Rock Hudson…

‘The Breakfast Club’ at 25

God, this makes me feel old…

On Monday, September 20, The Paris Theater in New York City filled to standing-room only for a 25th-anniversary screening of the seminal teen classic ‘The Breakfast Club.’ The event, organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center, celebrated not just the 1985 hit, but the life of writer-director John Hughes, who passed away last August at the age of 59.

After the screening, the audience was treated to a special 90-minute Q&A with four of its stars: Judd Nelson (“Bender”), Anthony Michael Hall (“Brian”), Molly Ringwald (“Claire”) and Ally Sheedy (“Allison”). Notably absent was the other main cast member, Emilio Estevez, who Ringwald joked was “the Greta Garbo of the Brat Pack — he just wants to be left alone.” The night was moderated by noted Hughes fan Kevin Smith, who declared, “I saw this movie when I was 14 years old, and from that moment on, I wanted to join the Breakfast Club. Tonight, thanks to one omission, I can. Tonight only, I’m standing in for the jock.”

Arrest warrant issued for Lohan, jail possible – Yahoo! News

One Question:  Who the hell cares???

All the important subjects that really need media coverage and analysis and they wastes pages of paper, miles of internet space, hours of television time  and tons of resources on one marginally talented, semi-famous starlet who hasn’t had a hit movie in years.  I just don’t get it….

Do people actually care about this stuff????

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – A judge issued an arrest warrant Monday for Lindsay Lohan after the actress acknowledged failing a drug test less than a month after she was released from inpatient rehab.

Superior Court Judge Elden Fox also revoked Lohan’s probation in her three-year-old drug case while issuing the bench warrant in Beverly Hills.

However, the warrant was stayed, and Lohan was allowed to remain free pending a hearing Friday to determine if she violated her probation.

Fox previously threatened the actress with 30 days in jail for each violation. He must now decide whether to send her back to jail or into treatment.

Fall Movies 2010 Preview: 20 Films We’re Psyched About | Inside Movies

Very good list of movies coming out shortly that appear interesting.  After a summer of almost nothing to see, it will be nice to have some, hopefully, good movies to look forward to this fall!

For moviegoers, autumn traditionally signals a return to serious drama and relatively weighty subject matter after the popcorn-flavored fare of summer. And while we certainly have a decent slate of rock-solid dramas to look forward to this year (including ‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’, ‘Stone’ and ‘Fair Game’), there’s also a variety of other offerings: Two very different comedies starring Zach Galifianakis, romantic comedies, thrillers with and without action, and films that may or may not be documentaries, to round things out.

Though no major theme dominates the season, a few minor ones are evident, namely directorial Afflecks (Casey’s debut and Ben’s return), movies involving Facebook, and, as previously noted, questionable docs. Plus James Franco — virtually a theme in himself these days — taking on two demanding roles.

Here, in order of release date, are 20 fall movies we’re really looking forward to:

Cammie King, Bonnie Butler in ‘Gone With the Wind,’ Dies at 76 | PopEater.com

But Olivia de Havilland (Melanie Wilkes) is still around and kicking…

Cammie King Conlon, the former child actress who portrayed the doomed daughter of Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara in ‘Gone With the Wind,’ has died at the age of 76. She died of lung cancer Wednesday morning at her Fort Bragg home on California’s north coast, said friend Bruce Lewis. Her son, Matthew Ned Conlon, was by her side.

Conlon was picked to play the small but pivotal role of Bonnie Blue Butler in the 1939 Civil War epic at age 4. Her character’s death in a fall from a pony irrevocably damages Rhett and Scarlett’s tumultuous marriage.

Conlon also voiced the young doe Faline in Walt Disney’s ‘Bambi’ three years later. It would be her final film role.

“My mother decided she wanted me to have a normal childhood,” she wrote on her blog, which talked about her brief career and a memoir she published last year on her ‘Gone With the Wind’ experience. She often joked with interviewers that she had “peaked at 5.”

The Los Angeles native graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in communications and spent two years editing California Pictorial magazine. She moved to Mendocino County 30 years ago, working as director of the Kelly House museum and as a publicist for the Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce and the Little River Inn.

Conlon stayed in touch with her ‘Gone With the Wind’ family. On Sunday night, she took a call from Olivia de Havilland, who played Scarlett’s sweet-hearted nemesis Melanie in the film, her son said.

Hollywood’s Best Actors For The Buck – Forbes.com

Interesting…

Earning $20 million upfront for a movie is so 2007. These days studios are squeezing every cent they can out of actors, and that means many stars only earn the big bucks after the studio gets back its money.

In these frugal times it’s useful to look at which actors earn studios the most for their money. Pay someone $10 million to star in your big summer blockbuster and what can you expect for your investment? If you hire Shia LaBeouf, expect a lot. For the second year in a row, he tops our list of Hollywood’s Best Actors for the Buck.

And:

Because women typically earn less than men in Hollywood, they make up a full half of our top 10 list. Anne Hathaway is the highest-ranking woman in the No. 2 spot. For every dollar she earns studios earn $64 off of her films.

“The Last Station”: A DVD Recommendation

“The Last Station”, one of my favorite films from last year is now out on DVD.  If you missed it at the theatre, I strongly urge you to buy or rent the DVD.

The film is a multi-layered look at the last days of Count Leo Tolstoy and the people around him.

It’s also a fascinating glimpse at Russia in a certain time and place.

History buffs will love it as much of fans of great acting and great storytelling.

Christopher Plumber, Helen Mirren and James McAvoy, among others, are just wonderful….
