Student Loan Vote: Republicans Block Bill To Extend Low Interest Rates

The GOP is so blatant in their contempt for the Middle Class- or anyone who isn’t part of the 1%….

Could it be more obvious they are only there to protect and help the wealthy and could not care less about the vast majority of Americans?

I can’t believe people who don’t make over a million dollars a year still vote for these guys….

It’s insane!

Their votes are killing the Middle Class and destroying our young people’s futures…

Education is the key to upward mobility, financial security and a fulfilling career- hopefully one that gives back to society.

From HuffingtonPost.com:

WASHINGTON — Senate Republicans on Tuesday blocked a bill that would have frozen student loan interest rates before they are set to double on July 1.

In a partisan vote of 52 to 45, the Senate failed to reach the 60 votes needed to begin debate on the Democratic bill. Sen. Olympia Snowe (Maine) was the lone Republican to vote “present.” A Snowe spokesman told The Huffington Post her vote was related to her practice of voting “present” on legislation that contains the potential or appearance of association with the private business activity of her husband.

The vote wasn’t much of a surprise: Republicans have been signaling they would filibuster the bill because of its cost offsets. Democrats would cover the $6 billion cost of keeping student loan interest rates at 3.4 percent for another year by raising Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes on certain high-earners. By contrast, Republicans have called for nixing a preventive health fund to pay for it.

Ultimately, the vote gives Democrats another chance to try to frame Republicans as favoring the wealthy over the middle class in the midst of intensifying election-year politicking.

Cantor: Taxing The Rich Is Off The Table, But Making Students Pay More Immediately Is Fine

It’s Eric Cantor Day again on “Lost in the 21st Century!”

This guy is just plain evil and I’m doing my little part to be sure people know what he’s up to…

And he won’t even agree to raise taxes on Millionaire’s private planes…or any additional taxes for the rich…

BUT

This guy wants to make poor students start paying interest on their student loans the minute they get them- instead of after Graduation.

Evil.  Evil Prick.

From ThinkProgress.org (emphasis mine):

One of the major demands that almost all congressional Republicans have made about deficit reduction is that wealthier americans and large corporations shouldn’t have to pay any more in taxes. “The House has taken a firm position against anything having to do with increasing taxes or raising tax rates,” said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) at the onset of negotiations over the budget deficit in May.

Yet as the Daily Beast’s Howard Kurtz reports, one group that Cantor is apparently fine with making pay more is American college students. Cantor, at the White House for budget negotiations, apparently proposed that students who take out student loans should immediately start paying interest, rather than getting to make payments after graduation:

As Monday’s White House budget talks got down to the nitty-gritty, Eric Cantor proposed a series of spending cuts, one of them aimed squarely at college students. The House majority leader, who did most of the talking for the Republican side, said those taking out student loans should start paying interest right away, rather than being able to defer payments until after graduation. It is a big-ticket item that would save $40 billion over 10 years.

According to Kurtz, Obama rejected Cantor’s proposal out of hand, saying that he didn’t want to “screw students.” Cantor’s proposal comes at a time when American students are already overwhelmed by student loan debt. In 2008, the average debt that a college student graduated with was a whopping $23,000. American students continue to pay more than most of their developed world neighbors for a college education, and Cantor apparently wants to make it even more difficult for them while not touching the richest Americans.

Rutgers Parents Outraged by Snooki Speech – FoxNews.com

I knew there would be a backlash…

I still can’t believe they paid her $32K, which is 2$ more than they are paying Toni Morrison to give the graduation speech…

If I was paying Rutgers tuition, I would be furious…

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J.–Angry parents of students attending Rutgers University blasted the decision to pay Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi $32,000 to give a campus talk last week — and said she should stay on the Jersey Shore, the New York Post reported Sunday.

“It’s disgusting,” said Nester Delgado, 43, whose daughter is a Rutgers freshman.

“Next year, is it going to be J-WOWW or The Situation?”

Parents fumed that Snooki was paid nearly $10,000 more than the $23,466 they have to fork over annually in tuition fees and housing to send their kids to the Garden State university.

“I don’t think she’s a good representation of a role model for my kids,” said Christine Getz, 47, a part-time preschool teacher who has a son and daughter at Rutgers.

The boardwalk bimbo drew 2,000 students to both of her Q&A sessions Thursday night at which she offered tales of her rise to “guidette” stardom, and offered such advice as “When you’re tan, you feel better about yourself,” and “Study hard, but party harder.”

The backlash comes after many students spoke out against the decision to host the reality TV star on campus.

“As an RU student, I’m really ashamed,” one student tweeted, according to FOXNews.com

“My tuition dollars wasted on Snooki,” another student wrote. “Rutgers probably could have paid her with a case of beer.”

Members of the Rutgers University Programming Association (RUPA), which organized the event, defended the high speaking fee, saying the group had been looking for someone who could appeal to the student community.

“We’re trying to provide different kinds of experiences to students,” said the group’s president, Ana Castillo.

Snooki’s $32,000 fee caused a stir when it was revealed she got $2,000 more than Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison will get for this year’s commencement address.
