Soloflex, Jerry Lee Wilson: A pilot, a shirtless spokesmodel, and a transformational home-fitness device.

Interesting article from “Slate” about Soloflex and how it changed TV Marketing.

I had forgotten about this thing, but now I remember the commercials very well.

Not that they ever inspired me to buy one, but anyway…

If late-night television commercials are to be believed, America’s soft-bodied sofa dwellers dream primarily of three things: owning a knife that can cut through a penny; obtaining cash for gold; and building their muscles with a minimum of time, money, and effort. Of these three dreams, the last appears to be the most pressing. Today, gullible endomorphs can choose from dozens of fitness miracles: the Total Gym, which is endorsed by Chuck Norris; the Ab Flyer, an expensive swing that tones your midsection; the Thigh Glider, which turns leg-spreading into an exciting workout; and the Flex Belt, which uses electronic stimulation to shock your abdomen into six-pack shape.

Twenty-five years ago, though, a single home-fitness product ruled the airwaves: Soloflex. The first comprehensive home-exercise device marketed to a mass audience, Soloflex broke ground with its unique design, which promised users a safe way to build their bodies at home; its magazine ads, featuring close-up photographs of chiseled torsos and abdomens; and its infomercials, which brought those torsos and abdomens to life. Although Soloflex no longer paces the home exercise market, it paved the way for all the Ab Flyers and Thigh Gliders to come and changed the way we think about building our bodies.

Gay “Jersey Shore”: Reality show focuses on Atlantic City gay community

Oh, god….

Doesn’t the Gay Community have enough negative press without this?  This is just what we do NOT need.  A gay version of all those trashy “Jersey Shore” people…

Well, at least it’s not set in the South…they usually come to us to abuse stereotypes…Glad to see some other regions are getting their chance.

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (NBC) – “Jersey Shore” fans wishing there was a gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender “Situation” going on are about to get their wish.

Under the Boardwalk Productions is holding an open casting call for the GLBT community for a new reality show pilot described as at “GLBT” Jersey Shore.

A source from the production company says the new show will be similar to the Jersey Shore but with a gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender cast.

The pilot for Under the Boardwalk (the show’s title for now) will be shot this spring and if the show is picked up then cast members will live in a beach house in Atlantic City, Ventnor or Margate for the summer.

“I think it will be fascinating,” said producer Kim Friedman.

The tryout requires no line reading. The only thing the casting directors need is a videotaped interview to figure out whether you’re the next Snooki, Paulie D or Situation.

NC GOPer Rips Sen. Burr For ‘Endorsing Immorality’ With DADT Vote | TPMDC

I still can’t believe Senator Burr voted to end DADT as it’s really out of character for him…I figured he just didn’t know what he was voting on.

I also figured the NC GOP, which is seriously crazy, would go ballistic over Burr’s vote.

I love the part about Military recruits being “preyed on” by homosexuals…

North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr’s vote to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ isn’t sitting well with some fellow Republicans back in his home state, even as one prominent local Democrat plans to thank him in writing.

The Charlotte Observer reports that county commissioner Bill James has vowed not to support Burr in future elections.

“I think there are a lot of things that people of all political stripes tolerate from their politicians,” James said. “But endorsing immorality and allowing military recruits to be preyed on by homosexuals is not one that I will tolerate.”

The Aging Gay Community-From DavidMixner.com

Very astute observations from David Mixner’s blog:

In the Bible in Palms 71:18 there is a verse that says, “When I am old and gray, do not forsake me…”

The LGBT community is about to lose their tribal leaders, elders and generational history without even a peep. In addition, our collective soul might be scarred for ignoring the plight and needs of those whose sacrifice made it possible for today’s generation. Most will never even know or enjoy the rights that they fought so hard for you to celebrate today. They couldn’t adopt children, run for office or serve in the military. Often they were institutionalized or forced to live lives of lies and fear.

The baby boom generation of LGBT citizens is the one that spans our history from the oppressive 50’s, to the transitional 60’s, the liberating 70’s, the plague ridden 80’s and the beginning of hope in the 1990’s. A good deal of the male population of those times already passed in the prime of their youth from HIV/AIDS. Some of the most remarkable women LGBT leaders came to power in that time. Epic battles and tragic stories are waiting to be recorded and told to future generations.

The LGBT community must acknowledge that this generation of LGBT baby boomers is getting old in a time with few services to meet their needs as LGBT seniors. Often they are in smaller and smaller living units, scraping by with little food, limited access to healthcare and almost no living facilities to share with other senior LGBT citizens. The few gay men that are still alive after the AIDS onslaught have few or no peers to share their senior years since the disease wiped out so many of their friends. Like it or not, what remains from the pandemic is an epidemic of loneliness among our seniors.

Adding to our shame in treatment of our LGBT seniors is the fact that we are losing our history. These citizens lived and experienced the transformation of the LGBT community over the last five decades. Their stories are invaluable to future generations especially since we have lost so much of our history to HIV/AIDS. Not only are our storytellers gone but their papers were often destroyed by surviving straight family members. Oral histories should be happening all over the country now. The stories of oppression, bravery, courage and battles fought should not be lost. From our history comes our self esteem and sense of community.

Christmas Video of the Day: From Paris Holiday Kiss-In Against Homophobia

I ran this last year and liked it so much I wanted to run it again….

It’s a Christmas Video from the Kiss In Against Homophobia shot in Paris last December…

They seem to do these Kiss-Ins about every six months in Paris, but this is the best video.

They also seem to do these Kiss-Ins in various other cities and countries.  But the Paris one has the prettiest people…

Not that I’m shallow or anything….

Is Lindsey Graham About to Get Outed?

This could be fun…

If this happens, Lindsey definitely asked for it…

Gay rights activist Mike Rogers, the professional outer of closeted, hypocritical gay politicians, claims to have “pictures of a man who spent the night” with Sen. Lindsey Graham. He’s supposedly meeting with his lawyer today before releasing them.

Rogers’ previous outings of Ex-Rep. Mark Foley, Ex-Sen. Larry Craig and Ex-RNC chair Ken Mehlman, among others, once earned him the completely arbitrary title of “most feared man on the Hill.” He keeps a list, and there are still many names on it.

Lindsey Graham has been hounded by gay rumors since his first runs for Congress in the ’90s. He has never been married, which, to some, proves everything. The rumors still come up regularly, like when another South Carolina politician let it slip in a 2009 interview. And the New York Times Magazine asked him about it in a big profile earlier this year, to which Graham responded, “I ain’t gay.”

But what if he is gay anyway? Mike Rogers tweeted these two items on December 18 — the day Graham voted against repealing “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” — but few noticed until Wonkette picked them up today:

I wonder if Lindsey Graham knows I have pictures of a man who spent the night at his house. pls RT

– 10:57 AM Dec 18th

Just reached lawyer at home. Meeting set for Tues. on releasing pix of man who spent night at Lindsey Graham’s.

– 11:05 AM Dec 18th

The language here could use a little more specificity. What does he mean “pictures of a man who spent the night” at Graham’s house? Pictures of the man leaving the house? Pictures of a goodbye kiss? Is the man his best friend John McCain? Because maybe he just had male friends over to play Connect Four, like all middle-aged bachelors with money. In any event, gay bloggers are stocking up on popcorn.

We’ll see what Mike Rogers comes up with, assuming his lawyer doesn’t nix this plan. But keep in mind that Lindsey Graham is still an active member of the Air Force reserves, and Don’t Ask Don’t Tell — which Graham voted against just three days ago — will still be kinda-sorta in place for a time until the full repeal takes effect.

If Graham’s worried about this, it could account for all of the hyperventilation and rage he’s shown in the last few days.

A Gay Commander in Chief – Ready or Not? – NYTimes.com

Maureen Dowd frequently gets on my nerves, but I love this column.

There is a lot of truth and things to think.

And it’s fun….

Click the link to the full article for a really good reading experience…

Jimmy Carter is putting the out in outspokenness.

In an interview with bigthink.com, the former president was asked, “Is the country ready for a gay president?”

Even as John McCain and other ossified Republicans were staging last-minute maneuvers to torpedo the “don’t ask, don’t tell” repeal, the 86-year-old Carter was envisioning a grander civil rights victory.

“I would say that the answer is yes,” he said. “I don’t know about the next election, but I think in the near future.”

The news that Leonardo DiCaprio and Armie Hammer will smooch in an upcoming movie about J. Edgar Hoover and his aide Clyde Tolson — buried near each other in the Congressional Cemetery on Capitol Hill — is a reminder of an “Advise and Consent” Washington where being a closeted gay official made you vulnerable to blackmail.

Others feel we’re not ready for a gay president, citing the fear and loathing unleashed by the election of the first black president. “Can you imagine how much a gay president would have to overcompensate to please the macho ninnies who control our national debate?” Bill Maher told me. “Women like Hillary have to do it, Obama had to do it because he’s black and liberal, but a gay president? He’d have to nuke something the first week.”

Gay troops cautiously optimistic following ‘don’t ask’ repeal

Great article from the Washington Post on the real impact of DADT repeal to actively serving Gay troops.

People need to remember that John Wayne is dead and it’s a totally different world now compared to 25 or 30 years ago.  Thank god….

KABUL – The gay Army lieutenant’s heart had been racing all night.

Shuffling between meetings at his outpost in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday night, the 27-year-old officer kept popping his head into the main office to catch a glimpse of Fox News’s coverage of the Senate debate that led to a vote lifting the ban on gay men and lesbians serving in the military openly.

“Don’t cry,” a 21-year-old specialist, one of the lieutenant’s confidants, told his boss jokingly when news broke that 65 senators had voted to repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell.”

“I’m completely numb,” was all the lieutenant could mutter.

Across the world, other gay troops whose lives, careers and relationships have been indelibly, if sometimes quietly, shaped by the ban reacted to the news with a mixture of rapture and disbelief.

Many had seethed for weeks as the political debate over the repeal became laden with sexual innuendo and suggestions that openly gay soldiers on the front lines might become life-threatening distractions.

“I was flipping out,” the lieutenant said Saturday night, speaking by phone. “This turned into a [expletive] political fight. We were caught in the middle of it. But the people who it affects the most couldn’t do anything about it. We felt used.”

The stakes were also high for the specialist. His brother is gay and had vowed to join the Air Force if the policy were repealed this year. Their father is also gay, which made attending military events somewhat awkward for the family.
