Elizabeth Edwards Op Ed – Bowling 1, Health Care 0 – NYTimes.com

Just to remember a phenomenal woman, I wanted to post this excerpt from an op ed Elizabeth Edwards wrote for the New York Times back in 2008.

She not only was the classier, more honest one in her marriage to John Edwards, I think she was the smartest one.

We were enriched to have her voice as part of the public debate.  She will be missed.

I’ll let her words speak again…

Here is the excerpt with a link to the full article at the bottom:

Well, the rancor of the campaign was covered. The amount of money spent was covered. But in Pennsylvania, as in the rest of the country this political season, the information about the candidates’ priorities, policies and principles — information that voters will need to choose the next president — too often did not make the cut. After having spent more than a year on the campaign trail with my husband, John Edwards, I’m not surprised.

Why? Here’s my guess: The vigorous press that was deemed an essential part of democracy at our country’s inception is now consigned to smaller venues, to the Internet and, in the mainstream media, to occasional articles. I am not suggesting that every journalist for a mainstream media outlet is neglecting his or her duties to the public. And I know that serious newspapers and magazines run analytical articles, and public television broadcasts longer, more probing segments.

But I am saying that every analysis that is shortened, every corner that is cut, moves us further away from the truth until what is left is the Cliffs Notes of the news, or what I call strobe-light journalism, in which the outlines are accurate enough but we cannot really see the whole picture.

It is not a new phenomenon. In 1954, the Army-McCarthy hearings — an important if painful part of our history — were televised, but by only one network, ABC. NBC and CBS covered a few minutes, snippets on the evening news, but continued to broadcast soap operas in order, I suspect, not to invite complaints from those whose days centered on the drama of “The Guiding Light.”

The problem today unfortunately is that voters who take their responsibility to be informed seriously enough to search out information about the candidates are finding it harder and harder to do so, particularly if they do not have access to the Internet.

Did you, for example, ever know a single fact about Joe Biden’s health care plan? Anything at all? But let me guess, you know Barack Obama’s bowling score. We are choosing a president, the next leader of the free world. We are not buying soap, and we are not choosing a court clerk with primarily administrative duties.

Elizabeth Edwards gravely ill with cancer

Sad news….

WASHINGTON — Elizabeth Edwards is gravely ill and doctors have told her she only has weeks to live, according to a family friend who is among those who have gathered with Edwards at her North Carolina home.

The family issued a statement Monday that said doctors have told her that further treatment for her cancer would be unproductive, and the family friend further described Edwards’ condition to The Associated Press.

The friend said Edwards was briefly hospitalized last week and received treatment, but doctors have now told her that she may only have up to a couple months of life left. The friend spoke on condition of anonymity because of the personal details divulged.

Edwards’ estranged husband, former presidential candidate John Edwards, and their three children were at her side at the Chapel Hill home, the friend reported. Her sister, brother, nieces, nephews, former campaign advisers and other friends were also there. The friend said Elizabeth Edwards is not in pain and in good spirits despite the seriousness of her condition.

where-americans-are-getting-richer: Personal Finance News from Yahoo! Finance

I knew I was lucky, but this shows how lucky those of us with jobs are….

Greensboro, N.C., might not be the best place to find a steady job. But if you’ve already got one, chances are you’re doing better than you were a couple of years ago.

The city’s unemployment rate is 9.8%, nearly a point above the still-high national average. But those with college degrees who have managed to keep their jobs during the recession have seen their median income jump to $53,400 in 2010 from $48,900 in 2007.

Here Comes Shuler: NC Dem Set To Make His Leadership Bid Official This Weekend | TPMDC

This man is dumb as dirt….

I live in North Carolina and know….

Nancy Pelosi is one of the few Democrats who know how to fight.  And she delivered.  She’s one of the most effective Speakers of the House I can remember.

She’s being blamed for the dysfunctional Senate and the lack of message control and balls in the White House….

The good new is this- and this fool- is going no where….

Rep. Heath Shuler (D-NC) is setting the stage for an official challenge to Nancy Peolsi’s bid to lead the Democratic minority in the next Congress. Shuler, a moderate from the North Carolina mountains, will make his intentions official on the national stage this weekend, The Hill reports.

Shuler pitched himself as a moderate alternative to Pelosi as leader of the House caucus before she officially announced her run for Minority Leader in the next Congress.

Now, with most observers thinking Pelosi has the position locked up, Shuler appears ready to make good on his promise to take her on.

He “is scheduled to address his leadership plans during appearances on CNN’s ‘State of the Union’ Sunday and MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program on Monday,” The Hill’s Mike O’Brien reports.

Even Shuler says he’s the under(blue)dog in a battle against Pelosi for House Democratic leader. He told one local paper in his district that “it is probably a race we can’t win.”

Rielle Hunter Sought Affairs With Famous Actors: National Enquirer

I don’t need to comment, this says it all….

Rielle Hunter, the blonde film producer whose affair with John Edwards rocked the political world, is allegedly still on the prowl.

According to the National Enquirer, the same publication that blew the Edwards sex scandal wide open, Hunter recently visited Los Angeles — and tried to get in touch with at least a couple of famous men. The Enquirer reports that Hunter sought out “Friends” star Matt LeBlanc.

According to the article, Hunter told a friend that “if she can’t marry John Edwards, then marrying a famous actor is high up in those dreams of hers.”

Hunter is currently locked in a lawsuit with ex-Edwards aide Andrew Young, who could face jail time over a dispute about a John Edwards-Rielle Hunter sex tape.

More information about Hunter’s West coast trip can be found in the latest issue of National Enquirer.

Daily Kos: Dirty voter suppression tricks in North Carolina

Here we go….

Democratic and independent voters are being harassed by robocalls. The state Democratic party reports (via e-mail)

RALEIGH, NC —With less than 24 hours until the close of polls tomorrow night, the North Carolina Democratic Party is getting reports of disgraceful repeated robo calls to unaffiliated and Democratic voters from conservative interest groups meant to anger voters and suppress turnout.

These unsolicited robo calls, which are coming to a voters sometimes up to eight times in a row, include a Democratic candidate asking for support in tomorrow’s election. Not surprisingly, many people hang up the call before they can hear the full message. The NCDP expects these robo calls to continue being made to unaffiliated and Democratic households into the middle of the night.

“These robo calls are a desperate, despicable, and unfortunately, predictable, attempt by the GOP to keep Democratic voters away from the polls tomorrow,” said Andrew Whalen, Executive Director of the NCDP.  “It seems like there is no line Republicans will not cross in order to secure victory. North Carolina voters need to know who is behind these calls, and the NCDP will do everything in its power to ensure these likely illegal calls are stopped as soon as possible.”

These robo calls are not the first dirty tricks Republicans have played in the days leading up to tomorrow’s election. On Sunday, an organization named Americans in Contact PAC (AIPAC) started sending out unsolicited text messages to voters in the districts of Congressmen Heath Shuler and Larry Kissell. These text messages, which could violate FCC regulations, provided a phone number to the Democratic candidates’ campaign offices, leaving voters with the impression that the text messages were sent from their campaigns.

“North Carolinians are sick and tired of shady and anonymous interest groups trying to play games with the democratic process,” Whalen said. “If Republican candidates have any dignity, they will condemn these tactics and call for their immediate termination.”

It’s not the first instance of voter suppression in North Carolian. Last week, BlueNC reported about tactics being used against Brad Miller.

Daily Kos: NC-Sen: Race tightening

From Dailykos…

I always thought this race was winnable if only Elaine could get on the air.  Richard Burr is such a non-entity corporate tool….

The most winnable race of the cycle the DSCC has ignored is the Senate race in North Carolina, where the party committee took one look at Democrat Eliane Marshall’s cash on hand numbers and decided to go play elsewhere. And yes, after the second quarter, it was bleak. After her protracted primary, Marshall had less than $200,000 in the bank compared to incumbent Republican Richard Burr’s $6 million.

Yet we’ve seen the last several cycles that the money race isn’t really about who has more, but whether the challenger has enough to get his or her message out and a political environment that is receptive to that message.

In North Carolina, Burr has never established any semblance of real popularity, and as such, was always a prime target. Yet Marshall’s money situation spurred Democrats to ignore Burr’s weaknesses — a decision that they may regret in two weeks:

The good news for Marshall is that she’s picking up undecided voters and closing the gap against Burr. She now trails by 8 points, 48-40, after facing a 13 point deficit against Burr three weeks ago. She’s starting to shore up her support with the base, getting 73% of Democrats compared to 65% in the previous poll.

And that base is getting larger as the level of interest from Democratic voters picks up with the election moving closer. In late September the likely voter pool for this year voted for John McCain by a 9 point margin, suggesting a massive drop in Democratic turnout given that Barack Obama actually won the state. Now the likely voter pool reflects an electorate that supported McCain by 4 points, still pointing to a decline in Democratic turnout but perhaps not as massive as it looked like it would be earlier in the cycle.

What changed? Like PPP notes, Democrats are coming home. And Marshall is finally on the air, after enduring seven weeks of unanswered Burr attack ads. Despite the disparity in the air war, Burr is still below 50 percent, and Marshall seems to be sucking up all the undecided votes.

Furthermore, 6.2 percent of the vote is already in thanks to North Carolina’s early voting. Among the 126,899 ballots received, Democrats have cast 43.5 percent of them compared to 38.8 percent for Republicans.

This one ain’t over.

Staged Reading of plays by Steve Willis, Oct. 25 at 7pm

Just a note to let you know about an evening of plays from the Great American Playwright Steve Willis.

Who just happens to be my partner!

I hope you will mark your calendars and plan to be part of a special event on Monday evening, Oct. 25th, when Paper Lantern Theatre Company presents a staged reading of two plays by Steve Willis: The Shadow of Eldorado, a play he wrote a few years ago that won several awards; and an excerpt from a new play he started writing this summer about Dorothy Kilgallen. Check out the attached flyer for all the details.
Paper Lantern has lined up a terrific cast of excellent local actors, including Michael Kamtman, Tennille Foust, and Beth Ritson. The event is free and we would love it if you could be there.
Feel free to spread the word to anyone you know who might be interested.
Hope to see you there.

“The Glass Menagerie” at Triad Stage

We had the privilege of seeing the last performance of “The Glass Menagerie” at Triad Stage tonight.  Our season tickets are usually for earlier in the run, but we had to  move them later due to a conflict.  I really wish we had seen it earlier so I could encourage more people to go see it.  It was truly stellar.

Preston Lane’s post-modern staging, incorporating video and a striking, yet minimalist set was brilliantly executed.  His direction was spot on.  Preston and Triad Stage always do good work when presenting Tennessee William’s work, but they really raised the bar with this production.

While I love Tennessee Williams and know his work very well, “The Glass Menagerie” is usually my least favorite of his plays.  It could have something to do with  Southern Mother thing hitting a little too close home!  But, anyway, this was a whole new take on the play.  I’ve seen this play many, many times and for the first time, to me,  it really seemed to be Tom’s play and it was not overshadowed by Amanda.

All four actors gave lovely performances. It was a beautifully balanced ensemble consisting of Kate Goehring as Amanda/The Mother,  Cheryl Koski as Laura/The Daughter, Matthew Carlson as The Son/Tom and Tyler Hollinger as Jim/ The Gentleman Caller.  Great work by all.

If you missed this one, you really missed a treasure.  It’s nights like this that I am grateful that we have Triad Stage here in Greensboro.  Innovative, interesting theatre is always a treasure, but even more so when it’s in your own backyard.
