Study: Lost Male Drivers Waste $3,000 In Gas

Uh, no comment….

(Sept. 3) — Men waste more than $3,000 in fuel costs because they refuse to ask for directions when lost, according to a British study released as motorists across the U.S. prepare to load up their cars for the long Labor Day weekend.

The research, commissioned by British insurance company Sheila’s Wheels, revealed that male drivers travel 276 unnecessary miles each year because they stubbornly reject help when lost.

In what might not be shocking news for female passengers, the survey found that more than a quarter of men polled said they would wait at least half an hour before asking for directions when lost.

Obama’s Socialist Agenda Rewards Rich | ChristWire

From Christwire, my new favorite satirical website:

Less Education Means Less Risk of Joining Intellectual Elite; Less Travel Means More Patriotism; Less Wealth Means Better Chance of Entering Heaven

Janine Llewellen with James Llewellen

Who are the real elite of America?

Intellectuals who lack understanding of ordinary Americans?

World-travelers who see America through the eyes of foreigners?

The rich who have worked hard to earn wealth?

Or the righteous who go, not into everlasting punishment, but into life eternal?

The real elite are not those with advanced academic degrees in secular ideas, not those who travel to strange countries around the world, not those who amass great wealth on earth, but those who bask in the blessed light of the Lord.

Will the misguided socialist policies of Obama’s government do harm to the deserving rich of America? Did Bush, by contrast, lead them in the path of righteous light? Paradoxically, no!

When the poor cannot afford to join the intellectual elite, when they are educated by the Church and by television, when they see America from an American point of view, they are welcomed into Heaven. When the wealthy have leisure to understand secular ideas and to study non-Christian religions, when they jet around the world meeting non-Americans, when, with hard work and valid values, they gain a disproportionate share of wealth, they are as likely to enter the kingdom of Heaven as a camel to pass through the eye of a needle. Even wealth earned through virtuous endeavor dooms the rich by what it buys them: intellectualism, internationalism, and damnation.

Obama’s socialist agenda helps the rich by protecting them from harm. What is good for the rich is good for us all. The rich are the best among us: they have worked without expecting handouts, they create jobs, and they fuel the economy. With a little less money, they will remain the best. But they will also be a little less educated, a little less traveled, and a little more loved by God. Let this be! Through God’s will, Obama’s agenda, perverse as it may seem, will make our great country, already the best, all the greater. The rich will be blessed in heaven, just as they are on earth.

“Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God” –Matthew 19:24.

Lisa Birnbach’s ‘True Prep’ for Ultra-Modern Times – NY Times.com Review

Here is an excerpt from the the New York Times Review of  “True Prep” and a link to the full review:

In 1980 “The Official Preppy Handbook” arrived as a field guide to the habits of the cotillion-hopping, madras-wearing, loafer-shod upper crust. Was it a valentine, a joke or a prophecy? This much is clear: It began life as a $3.95 paperback and stayed on the New York Times best-seller list for more than a year. Copies were plentiful, yet asking prices for used ones today can easily top $100 and sometimes exceed $1,000. Somebody must think it contains useful information.

When Lisa Birnbach co-wrote and edited it, she was in some ways prescient: the J. Crew catalog wasn’t even a gleam in a marketer’s eye. But much of “The Official Preppy Handbook” just codified widely known information about high-WASP habits and affectations. (It also borrowed from “Take Ivy,” a 1965 style guide published in Japan.) Its original readers, whether they were knowing or curious, were apt to be of boarding-school age or a little older. Now they’re pushing 50.

After the handbook’s huge success Ms. Birnbach helped bring forth a wide array of less necessary titles. (Among them: “1,003 Great Things to Smile About” in 2004 and “40% Off Is the New Black” in 2009.) And the world changed — a lot. Among the post-1980 phenomena with which “The Official Preppy Handbook” could not conjure are the Internet, the McMansion, the cellphone, synthetic fleece and the emergence of famous rehab facilities as today’s new boarding schools.

So Ms. Birnbach has returned to the subject she knows best. Together with Chip Kidd, the graphic designer and writer with the certifiably preppy first name, she has come up with “True Prep: It’s a Whole New Old World,” a surprisingly worthwhile sequel to the now-creaky “Handbook.” This new compendium moves beyond school days to address matters newly relevant for the core readership: how to remarry, how to dress for a funeral and how to deal with the collateral damage caused by decades’ worth of the party-hearty behavior described in the first book.

Beliefs – ChristWire Web Site Mixes Satire, Religion and the Weather – NYTimes.com

Great article in today’s NY Times about Christwire.org, a site I have quoted and linked to frequently.   The most popular post was “Is My Husband Gay?”

I love that site and am glad to see them get some good publicity.

Since 2008, ChristWire.org has emerged as the leading Internet site for ultraconservative Christian news, commentary and weather reportage.

“Hurricane Earl Projected Path, Gay East Coast of America,” ChristWire opined on Monday. One headline in late August proclaimed, “Warning! Black Music Infiltrates the Minds of Future Homemaking White Women.” Last week, referring to Ken Mehlman, the former Republican Party chairman who came out of the closet last month, ChristWire asked, “Why does Ken Mehlman think that choosing the homosexual lifestyle is more important to him than the Republican values he once held so dear?”

ChristWire has lately reached new levels of popularity, in part thanks to an Aug. 14 column, “Is My Husband Gay?” Written by Stephenson Billings, the piece is a 15-point checklist to help wives detect possibly closeted husbands. “Gym membership but no interest in sports” is one warning sign. So is “Sassy, sarcastic and ironic around his friends” and “Love of pop culture.”

“Is My Husband Gay?” was picked up on The Huffington Post and mentioned by Ryan Seacrest on his radio show; so far it has been viewed 8.3 million times.

Oh, by the way: ChristWire is all one big joke.

Get Together…For What It’s Worth

I may be the only preppie, hippie, psuedo-socialist, big government, peacenick, intellectual elitist around….but I doubt it.  We used to be called Democrats before the party was co-opted by the Corporations…

Anyway…A little feel good flashback to 1967 to give us a little perspective before the campaign season bloodletting starts on Monday…

Cammie King, Bonnie Butler in ‘Gone With the Wind,’ Dies at 76 | PopEater.com

But Olivia de Havilland (Melanie Wilkes) is still around and kicking…

Cammie King Conlon, the former child actress who portrayed the doomed daughter of Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara in ‘Gone With the Wind,’ has died at the age of 76. She died of lung cancer Wednesday morning at her Fort Bragg home on California’s north coast, said friend Bruce Lewis. Her son, Matthew Ned Conlon, was by her side.

Conlon was picked to play the small but pivotal role of Bonnie Blue Butler in the 1939 Civil War epic at age 4. Her character’s death in a fall from a pony irrevocably damages Rhett and Scarlett’s tumultuous marriage.

Conlon also voiced the young doe Faline in Walt Disney’s ‘Bambi’ three years later. It would be her final film role.

“My mother decided she wanted me to have a normal childhood,” she wrote on her blog, which talked about her brief career and a memoir she published last year on her ‘Gone With the Wind’ experience. She often joked with interviewers that she had “peaked at 5.”

The Los Angeles native graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in communications and spent two years editing California Pictorial magazine. She moved to Mendocino County 30 years ago, working as director of the Kelly House museum and as a publicist for the Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce and the Little River Inn.

Conlon stayed in touch with her ‘Gone With the Wind’ family. On Sunday night, she took a call from Olivia de Havilland, who played Scarlett’s sweet-hearted nemesis Melanie in the film, her son said.

Prep Yourself

Great GQ video that makes the point that the Prep look really is multi-cultural, international, classic and casual.

I don’t agree with it all–too short pants are a no, no- but it’s basically right on…

True Prep

This one is mainly for my College friends.  The Washington and Lee, Sweet Briar, RMWC, Mary Baldwin, UVA and other Virginia Colleges  gang.

The rest of you, please bear with us…

If it’s any help…my partner says he would probably have hated me in College, but we’ve managed to reach a stylistic middle ground and last almost 14 years…

Lisa Birnbach was one of the authors of “The Official Preppy Handbook” back in the late 1970’s- early 1980’s.  I won’t say it was our handbook because that implies we didn’t know it all before hand.  It just happened to reflect our lives at the time.  Her new book, “True Prep”, comes out on September 7th.  It’s about Preps at Middle Age.  I’ve already pre-ordered my copy from Amazon.com.

I’m already scared….How many cliches can I be at one time?  I’m already seen as a middle aged Guppy and now I realize I’m still a middle aged Preppie.  From what I have read of this book so far, I’m totally still a prep.  Just because I have at least a half dozen pair of Cole Haan Loafers and my weekend wardrobe is totally J Crew.  Everything else is Brooks Brothers or Ralph Lauren.  It hurts to face the truth….

You can take the boy out of W&L, but you can’t take the W&L out of the boy…

Here is the video that defines our generation’s new place in Society:
