Julia Roberts, Jim Parsons, Matt Bomer and Alec Baldwin Join THE NORMAL HEART Film

I was one of the lucky people to see the recent Broadway production of this wonderful, heartbreaking play….

I’m so pleased it looks like it is finally headed to the big screen and thrilled with how the cast is shaping up….

Jim Parsons was a standout in the Broadway production and I’m so glad he’s repeating his role in the film.  This is a great break for Matt Bomer, who I just love in “White Collar”.  I think he’ll be just right in this part.   I can see Julia Roberts being very, very good as well.  This will be a challenge for her, but I can see it working.  And Mark Ruffalo can do no wrong….

I’m so excited that this film is being done and apparently being done right!

From Broadway World:

Julia Roberts, Jim Parsons, Matt Bohmer and Alec Baldwin have joined Mark Ruffalo in the upcoming film adaptation of THE NORMAL HEART, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Larry Kramer will adapt his script for the movie; Ryan Murphy, best known for creating FOX’s musical show GLEE, is set to direct the film. It’s being produced by Plan B.

Ruffalo is to play Ned Weeks, while Roberts will play Emma Brookner (the role for which Ellen Barkin received a 2011 Tony Award) and Bomer will play Felix Turner (the role for which John Benjamin Hickey received his Tony). Baldwin is set to play Ben Weeks, and Parsons will reprise his Broadway role as Tommy Boatwright.

The Normal Heart played a 12-week limited engagement on Broadway from April to July 2011. The production won three 2011 Tony® Awards, including Best Revival of a Play, Best Featured Actress in a Play (Ellen Barkin) and Best Featured Actor in a Play (John Benjamin Hickey). The play has also been honored as this season’s Best Revival of a Play by the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Drama League Awards and has received Drama Desk Awards for Best Ensemble and Best Direction of a Play, along with a Special Citation from the New York Drama Critics Circle.

The story of a city in denial, The Normal Heart unfolds like a real-life political thriller — as a tight-knit group of friends refuses to let doctors, politicians and the press bury the truth of an unspoken epidemic behind a wall of silence. First produced by Joseph Papp at New York’s Public Theater, the play was a critical sensation and a seminal moment in theater history. So ahead of its time was this play that many of the core issues it addresses – including gay marriage, the healthcare system and, of course, AIDS – are just as relevant today as they were when it first premiered.

Lucille Ball: Hey, Look Her Over

People forget Lucy could do more than situation comedy….

Doing “Mame” when she was way too old for the part kind of killed memories of how good she could be as a Song and Dance gal…

Not one of the greats, but very, very good and it provides proof of her abilities as an all around entertainer…

I think she still played her musical talent better on television- God knows, her movie of “Mame” was a mess….

Here are a couple of clips for entertainment on a rainy Saturday night- at least that’s the weather here in North Carolina…

From her Broadway show “Wildcat”, “Hey Look Me Over” with Steve Lawrence on TV:

With Shirley Maclaine from her TV Special “Gypsy in My Soul” (Which I really wish would come out on DVD….)

And from a Bob Hope Special:

Romney Campaign Busing in Mormons to Make Crowds

This is showing up on several websites today….

The Romney campaign is just collapsing in South Carolina and bussing in Mormon college students to make their crowds seem bigger and more excited….

This is really getting interesting….

From DailyKos:

Buzzfeed reports the latest signs of the complete collapse of the Romney campaign in South Carolina:

GREENVILLE, South Carolina–Outside Tommy’s Ham House here this morning–where Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich scheduled back-to-back visits–a boisterous crowd of young, fresh-faced supporters was waving Romney signs and chanting, “MITT! MITT! MITT!”

But this wasn’t a grassroots youth movement rooted at the University of South Carolina. No, many of the students cheering on the candidate told BuzzFeed they were actually BYU students and young Mormons from D.C. and Virginia who traveled to the Palmetto State to give their coreligionist’s presidential effort a much-needed jolt of energy.

Kat Wardle, a 23-year-old BYU student who is spending the semester in Washington, D.C., said she and several young Latter-Day Saints have been following Romney around the state, playing the role of cheerleaders at various campaign stops.

“I was all over the place at the Lexington rally!” said Wardle, referring to a rainy outdoor event that the campaign has been spinning as an example of growing momentum. Despite the weather, a crowd of several hundred remained for the event and, Romney surrogates like Nikki Haley have pointed out, they were loud and proud.

Happy Birthday, Robby Benson!

Another icon of my youth….

He’s 56 years old today….

Here are a few of clips from some of his greatest hits to celebrate his birthday….

And, little known fact, he was the voice of the Beast in the Disney cartoon “Beauty and the Beast”.

Here is a clip from 2010 where he discusses that and where he is today:

The Evolution of One Southern Liberal or Some Thoughts on Martin Luther King Day

I’ve spent the day on planes traveling on a business trip, but I can’t let today go without commenting on Dr King’s day….

Airline travel is so exhausting, I’m taking the lazy way out and reposting a post from my other blog that I put up last year.

It’s still one of my favorites…

As we approach the Holiday recognizing the contributions of Dr. King, I always tend to think about where we were, where we are and where we have yet to go. To me, this is a day to stop and think. And remember.

As a Southerner of a certain age, I just can’t let this day pass without comment. I don’t see how anyone of my generation can.

I grew up in the South before integration and during the Civil Rights Movement. I’m not sure if I even spoke to a black person, other than our maid, before the schools were integrated when I was in the 5th grade. People seem to forget the South in the early 1960’s was like South Africa under apartheid. It was a very separate and scary place. Everyone–and I mean everyone– had their place and society tried to keep them in it.

I think the late, great Molly Ivins said it best. Molly once wrote: “I believe all Southern liberals come from the same starting point — race. Once you figure out they are lying to you about race, you start to question everything.”

That was certainly the case for me. Realizing the falsities of racism made it possible to question many things, including homophobia, and to grow into acceptance and happiness about who I am today. This realization made it possible to meet and get to know people who have made my life much richer than it would have been without them in it. It made me value the need to learn and explore ideas, people and places that many people I knew wanted to ignore or discount. It made me think and grow.

Dr King once said: “Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.” Well said. That was, and sometimes still is, our biggest danger.

But, thankfully, a lot of us asked questions. We still do. Some of us are still trying to learn and figure things out. We have come a long way but have a long way to go. That’s why it’s so vital we ask questions and don’t accept simple answers. That we get to know and talk to people who aren’t like us. We sometimes discover they really are like us. That leads to more questions…

Racism is still very much with us. Don’t ever think the Teabaggers aren’t about racism. They are. They just may not even be able to admit that to themselves. If they could ask questions, they would ask why they weren’t upset about George Bush taking us from a budget surplus to a horrendous deficit. Instead, they blame Obama…

You figure that one out.

I did.

Republican Sponsor Of Bill To Require Drug Testing For Georgia Welfare Recipients Arrested For DUI

Does hypocrisy in the GOP know no limits?

I think not….

I also think if they want to pursue drug testing for people who get any kind of government support such as welfare, unemployment benefits, etc, they should do random drug and alcohol tests of all elected officials.

Fair is fair.  Both groups are getting government checks…

And require an IQ test with a minimum threshold to hold office.  That would get rid of most of the GOP….

Too bad you can’t test and measure pettiness and meanness…..

From ThinkProgress:

A Georgia Republican who wants all welfare reciepients subject to drug tests failed one himself after he ran a red light on Friday morning. The Atlanta Journal Constiution has the story on State Rep. Kip Smith (R):

Smith, whose given name is John Andrew Smith, first told the officer he had not consumed any alcoholic beverages.

“I asked him again, and he stated he had consumed a single beer at Hal’s. I noticed also that Mr. Smith’s eyes were watery, and I asked him to exit the vehicle, which he did,” Kramer said in the report.

Smith told the officer he’d had the beer 45 minutes earlier, and the officer asked him to blow into a hand-held “intoximeter”. The officer said the lawmaker refused, stating he would prefer to go to a clinic or the hospital to get tested.

The officer said Smith finally agreed to blow into the device. The report stated that Smith blew a .091., which is above the legal limit of .08.

Smith is a sponsor of Georgia House Bill 464, which would “require random drug testing” for citizens on public assistance. In response to Smith’s legislation, State Rep. Scott Holcomb introduced a bill last month that would require all state lawmakers to be subject to random drug testing.

Random drug tests for reciepents of public assistance are very likely to be found unconsitutional.

Happy Birthday, Charo!

It’s hard to believe that Charo is only 61 today….

It seems like she has been around much longer than that…

And I’ve always wondered:  “Why?”

She’s definitely a 20th Century Wonder who is Lost in the 21st Century….

But she is still working….

Bless her heart.  I’m sure she’s really sweet…

And she is also a truly talented classical guitarist…

Here is a video of her in her heyday:

And one of her taken last year in New York:

And proving she has a sense of humor, working with Carol Burnett:

Mitt the Ripper

Is Mitt Romney a Serial Killer?

Based on Mitt’s belief that Corporations are People and what he did making his fortune at Bain Capital,  that seems to be the logical conclusion this ad draws.

The premise makes sense to me….

Oh, the ad is from Jon Stewart in support of Stephen Colbert’s candidacy in the South Carolina GOP Primary next week…

This GOP Primary just keeps getting more and more entertaining!

And I’m sure these Masters of the Universe types who are running for the GOP Nomination are getting sick and tired of being challenged by the snarky little people….

They just hate it when Democracy happens….

Here is a link to the ad.  It won’t let me embed it here in the post….

John Edwards Has Life-Threatening Condition, Delays Trial

Another chapter in the sad soap opera that John Edwards’ life has become….

At least he didn’t cause this one out of his own arrogance, weaknesses, self-delusion and sorriness.

Unless it was caused by excessive jogging or inhaling too many peroxide fumes from new age blond bimbos….

From the Huffington Post:

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Ex-presidential candidate John Edwards has a serious heart condition that will require a medical procedure next month and his illness limits his travel including for an upcoming court case over possible campaign violations, his doctor told a judge, who delayed the trial.

Federal Judge Catherine Eagles did not disclose the exact nature of Edwards’ illness Friday or what procedure he needed. However, she said the two-time presidential candidate had “three episodes” and indicated his condition could be life-threatening if left untreated.

A cardiologist for the 58-year-old ex-North Carolina senator wrote two letters about his condition to Eagles, who talked about them during a hearing to consider whether the trial on six felony and misdemeanor counts should begin this month. Eagles said jury selection will now start March 26, at the earliest.

Edwards is taking medication and is scheduled to undergo a procedure in February from which it will take several days to recover, Eagles said. She did not describe what the episodes involved or if the procedure would require unclogging arteries or other common treatments. The doctor’s letters and other medical records have been kept under seal by the court.
