Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum Nearly Agreed To Form 2012 ‘Unity Ticket:’

Oh, this would have been fun!

Only the GOP could view this as a “Unity Ticket”….

It would have unified the country alright- against their ticket and given President Obama a real landslide….

From Bloomberg BusinessWeek via Huffington Post:

Pegged as an early frontrunner for the GOP’s 2012 presidential nomination, the Republican primary results were showing a different picture. Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) claimed the Iowa caucus and a clean sweep of three Feb. 7 contests. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) snagged the conservative foothold of South Carolina on Jan. 21, sparking questions of whether Romney was capable of inspiring the party to victory against President Barack Obama.

A Friday Bloomberg Businessweek report reveals that things could have been worse. Santorum and Gingrich were close to forming a “Unity Ticket,” aimed at knocking Romney out.

Santorum’s stock surged after that February 2012 rally, to a point where there was talk he could capture Romney’s home state of Michigan. According to the Businessweek report, that’s when the “Unity Ticket” discussion reached its peak. But negotiations collapsed just before Michigan’s Feb. 28 primary.

“Everybody thought there was an opportunity,” John Brabender, Santorum’s chief strategist, told Businessweek. “It would have sent shock waves through the establishment and the Romney campaign.”

At the heart of the Gingrich-Santorum breakdown was a battle over who would be the eventual presidential candidate. Based on what Gingrich told Businessweek, it appeared to be a deal-breaking factor.

“In the end, it was just too hard to negotiate,” Gingrich said.

October Surprise: Romney Lies, Under Oath, to Help Friend Protect Assets from Wife in Ugly Divorce

Of course it’s not surprise that Romney lies like a cheap rug…

Or that he considers women less than equal to men…

But that he lies under oath shows he’s surprisingly stupid….

Or feels he is so entitled oaths and laws don’t apply to him…

And helping rich friends keep their money always comes first….

What a scumbag….

From Salon.com:

Documents unsealed by a court in Massachusetts today show that Mitt Romney created a special share of stock to help a friend give his ex-wife less money during a nasty divorce, and then testified that she got a fair price, even though she made a fraction of what the shares were worth just a year later.

Romney testified that Tom Stemberg, the founder of Staples, had properly appraised the value of the company’s shares at $2.25 during the divorce. But a year later the share price closed at exactly 10 times that amount on the first day of its IPO.

As we noted yesterday, the divorce testimony was the “October Surprise” with the most potential to actually be surprising. It seems like it may not disappoint. While initial rumors that Romney lied about Staples’ value under oath appear overblown, the story is not particularly flattering at a time when both candidates are desperately trying to attract female voters.

Fran Lebowitz, Frank Rich At Town Hall: Pair Debate State Of The Union

These are two of my favorite political and social commentators….

I agree with about 99% of what they say….

I would love to see them together some time.

Here is a brief excerpt from a Huffington Post article on them:

Lebowitz, in particular, wants to caution her political allies — and her candidate — that sitting back and waiting for people to realize that you’re right and your opponent is wrong doesn’t work in the era of Kim Kardashian and Honey Boo Boo. “Obama [is] living in a world where I have chosen to live in, where a raised eyebrow has an effect — which is not the United States,” she told The Huffington Post.

She went on to refer to the Republican party as a “confederacy” and eviscerate Romney’s argument that his success as a C.E.O. proves that he can run the country. “[A business] has one goal: to make a profit,” she said. “Even three-year-olds have more complicated goals than that.”

Lindsay Lohan: Mitt Romney Supporter

If you need any further evidence that it’s insane to support Romney, this is it….

Poor, Lindsay….so lost in so many ways.

From the Huffington Post:

Lindsay Lohan has joined the likes of Stacey Dash and Hulk Hogan by telling the press she’s voting for Mitt Romney.

Appearing at a promotional event, the “Liz & Dick” star said her decision came down to one issue: unemployment.

“I just think employment is really important right now,” she said. “So, as of now, Mitt Romney. As of now.”

“It’s a long story,” she added, according to E! News.

The Real Paul Ryan Is Bad for America

Well, I called it correctly yesterday:  Joe Biden destroyed the well packaged, but vacuous stuffed suit that was Paul Ryan last night.  People finally started to see the real Paul Ryan- shallow, callow and not ready for prime time.

Finally, someone has called Paul Ryan to task and tried to make him answer for his glib, destructive positions with real facts and force him to step out from behind the smoke and mirrors that the GOP uses to disguise the very bad impacts of their very bad ideas.

And most of these very bad ideas come directly from Paul Ryan-with an assist from Ayn Rand.

Joe Biden really took him to task like the differential DC media always fails to do…

My favorite comment came from Bill  Maher:

“9-1-1 ?  There is an old man beating a child on my TV.”

Now, I’m sure the Conservatives will start blaming Martha Raddatz, the moderator, and everyone else in the media like they normally do when someone doesn’t let them get away with their tricks and lies…

There is a great piece from Charles Pierce at Esquire.com this morning everyone should read.  Here is a brief excerpt and a link to the full article:

For years, Paul Ryan has been the shining champion of some really terrible ideas, and of a dystopian vision of the political commonwealth in which the poor starve and the elderly die ghastly, impoverished deaths, while all the essential elements of a permanent American oligarchy were put in place. This has garnered him loving notices from a lot of people who should have known better. The ideas he could explain were bad enough, but the profound ignorance he displayed on Thursday night on a number of important questions, including when and where the United States might wind up going to war next, and his blithe dismissal of any demand that he be specific about where he and his running mate are planning to take the country generally, was so positively terrifying that it calls into question Romney’s judgment for putting this unqualified greenhorn on the ticket at all. Joe Biden laughed at him? Of course, he did. The only other option was to hand him a participation ribbon and take him to Burger King for lunch.

You know what’s the difference between Sarah Palin and Paul Ryan?

Lipstick.

Google Search for ‘completely wrong’ Yields Page of Romney Photos

Try it!

Search Google with the term “completely wrong”….

I just tried it and it still comes up Romney!  I’m sure they will make them fix it soon….

From CNN.Com:

To the amusement of Mitt Romney’s critics, a Google Image search for the phrase “completely wrong” on Wednesday returned a page nearly full of images of the Republican presidential candidate.

A Google spokesman said the gallery of photos is the unintentional result of normal Google analytics, which produce images associated with popular phrases in news headlines and search terms, and not the result of any effort to skew the results.

In this case, Google’s algorithms picked up on news coverage of Romney saying last week he was “completely wrong” when he made controversial statements last spring that 47% of Americans were “victims” and dependent on government. Romney took some political heat for the original comments, which were captured by a hidden camera at a private fundraiser in May and made public last month.

Underwear Sales Increase, Suggesting A Rebounding Economy

Here is some encouraging polling news….

From the HuffingtonPost:

WASHINGTON — There is an old saying among economists that the best way to assess the state of the economy is to look at people’s underwear.

OK, there’s no such saying. But when he served as chairman of the Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan did use the sales of male underpants as a way to take the temperature of the country’s economic well being. And if the Maestro were to take a peek right now, he’d find evidence that things are gradually improving.

The NPD Group, Inc., a leading market research company, has shown an uptick in sales of men’s underwear over the past year. Between Aug. 2010 and Aug. 2011, sales for all men’s “underwear bottoms” were roughly $2.074 billion. In the period between Aug. 2011 and Aug. 2012, that number was $2.194 billion. That represents a 6 percent jump in sales from year to year.

Looking closer at the data, specific undergarment companies are flourishing in the current economy. HanesBrands Inc., for example, has seen underwear sales increase steadily over the past three years, climbing from $1.83 billion in 2009 to $2.01 billion in 2010 to $2.06 billion in 2011, according to SEC files. Sales for the first half of 2012 — the most recent available data — are also stronger, coming in at $1.17 billion, compared to $1.15 billion in the first half of 2011. The company’s stock price, which hit a 6-month low of $24.78 per share on May 18, was over $33 per share on Monday.

Limited Brands Inc., the parent company of Victoria’s Secret, does not separate that company’s revenues from those of its other brand names, like Bath and Body Works. The company’s overall store sales for the first half of 2012, however, were up 8 percent from the first half of 2011, according to its latest earnings statement, and it saw its stock price rise from $45.11 on May 18 to more than $50 on Monday.

Greenspan’s theory on underwear sales as an economic indicator was fairly straightforward.

“If you look at sales of male underpants it’s just pretty much a flat line, it hardly ever changes,” NPR’s Robert Krulwich explained of the theory, after Greenspan’s book “The Age Of Turbulence” was published. “But on those few occasions where it dips that means that men are so pinched that they are deciding not to replace underpants. And [Greenspan] said ‘that is almost always a prescient, forward impression that here comes trouble.'”

In 2009, that certainly was the case. In April of that year, as The Huffington Post reported, the leading global research company Mintel produced a study showing a 2.3 percent drop in sales of all men’s underwear products in 2009. The recession had come quickly and unexpectedly. In November 2008, Mintel had forecast underwear sales to grow by 2.6 percent in 2009.

Men, in short, were cutting back so dramatically on their spending habits that they were no longer buying underwear regularly. Three years later, with the economy showing some signs of growth — albeit slow growth — they’re splurging a bit more.

Senior Citizen Support for Romney Crumbles.

I’m tempted to wish the election was today…

But the trends just keep getting better and better for President Obama…

Seniors are usually the most reliable Republican voters, but apparently not this time…

At this rate, by the election, only the Koch Brothers will be voting for Romney….

From Reuters:

New polling by Reuters/Ipsos indicates that during the past two weeks – since just after the Democratic National Convention – support for Romney among Americans age 60 and older has crumbled, from a 20-point lead over Democratic President Barack Obama to less than 4 points.

Romney’s double-digit advantages among older voters on the issues of healthcare and Medicare – the nation’s health insurance program for those over 65 and the disabled – also have evaporated, and Obama has begun to build an advantage in both areas.

Obama leads Romney among NASCAR Fans

Interesting….

This is one demographic group most folks assumed would not be supporting the President….

Seems Mitt’s positions, personae- not to mention comments about the poncho’s and NASCAR fashions- have not endeared him to these folks, either….

I’m wondering what demographic group, aside from old, rich, white men  Romney is winning now?

From Yahoo.com:

Mitt Romney’s recent slide in several polls, including those in the battleground states of Ohio, Virginia and Florida, is troubling enough for the GOP. But, now the Republican nominee appears to be trailing President Barack Obama among a traditionally conservative constituency: NASCAR fans.

Obama leads Romney 49 to 42 percent among NASCAR enthusiasts, according to a new Zogby poll by JZ Analytics.

As the liberal blog PoliticusUSA.com pointed out, Romney was booed at the Daytona 500 in February during a campaign trip ahead of Super Tuesday.
