Secret Donors Multiply in U.S. Election Spending – Bloomberg

People laughed at Hillary Clinton when she talked about the “Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy” all those years ago….

Little did we know how right she was…..

Commission on Hope and four other Republican-leaning groups spent at least $4.05 million attacking candidates in the run-up to the November voting, according to Campaign Media estimates and TV station records obtained by Bloomberg News. None of that spending can be found searching the public database of the Federal Election Commission, and FEC spokeswoman Mary Brandenberger said the commission has no record of it.

Federal law requires FEC disclosure of money spent on ads mentioning or depicting a candidate in the 60 days before a general election. The five groups whose spending wasn’t reported either declined to comment, were unreachable, or said they deemed the spending not reportable under the law.

The Man, The Can: Recipes Of The Real Chef Boyardee : NPR

I don’t think I could choke this stuff down today if I had to…

But growing up with a Mother who couldn’t- or wouldn’t- cook anything edible, we would have starved without Chef Boyardee!

Unlike the friendly but fictional food faces of Betty Crocker, Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben, Chef Boyardee — that jovial, mustachioed Italian chef — is real. Ettore “Hector” Boiardi (that’s how the family really spells it) founded the company with his brothers in 1928, after the family immigrated to America from Italy.

Though America came to know him as Chef Boyardee — in the apron and trademark tall hat — Anna Boiardi knew him simply as Uncle Hector. Anna carried on her family’s culinary tradition; her new book, Delicious Memories, is part cookbook, part family history and part homage to her ancestors — immigrants who made their way in a new country.

Democratic Professors vs Republican Professors: A Comparison

Interesting article from Inside Higher Education.  Especially in light of the recent information that the Koch brothers and other right-wing billionaires are trying to endow professorships to control what and how information is being taught in colleges…

Also, the Republicans don’t really think everyone should be able to go to College…That’s clear from their policies.

Hat Tip to Taegan Goddard’s Political Wire where I first saw this article mentioned…

Republican professors and Democratic professors presumably produce different outcomes when they enter the ballot box, but what about when they record grades?

A forthcoming study finds that there may be notable differences. Democratic professors appear to be “more egalitarian” than their Republican counterparts when it comes to grading, meaning that more of the Democratic grades are in the middle. Republicans are more likely than Democrats to award very high grades and very low grades.

Another key difference is that black students tend to fare better with Democrats than with Republicans.

Ocracoke Island Music: Katy Mitchell

Here is the singer, Katy Mitchell, that I mentioned in my Ocracoke Island Vacation Journal.

We heard today she was unable to perform the night we went to see her due to food poisoning.

We missed her this trip, but still hope to see her next year…

She’s good.  Really good….

She has a great CD available at Amazon or in stores on Ocracoke Island:  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A5L6U8/sr=1-2/qid=1306029519/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1306029519&sr=1-2&seller=

Rapture Fails: May 21 ‘Doomsday’ skips New York, No Rapture

Most of these folks who believed in the Rapture happening today would not be surprised to hear New York was skipped.  I’m sure they consider it a godless place…

Even though it seems one New Yorker spent $140K of his savings to try to save more New Yorkers…

But it seems most everywhere else was missed today, too.

We were driving home from vacation on a major highway and we did not see any cars going out of control as their drivers disappeared.  We had not really been too worried about that….

So, either there are very few worthy of the Rapture or this was a big bust…

Hmmm….

From the International Business Times:

As the crucial hour passed, however, no one seems to go anywhere, except their own destinations in New York City to enjoy the rest of the Saturday night.

Following Camping’s prediction and based on the 2009 US Census that numbered the population of New York City at about 19.5 Million, more than half a million people should have been taken up today. That is, if New Yorkers were “among the average”.

Camping had made a failed prediction previously saying Jesus Christ would return to Earth in 1994.

The 89 year old broadcaster stayed silent as the supposedly most glorious day in his life passes by and the events reported throughout the world have not followed his predictions. The headquarters of his broadcasting network of 66 stations stayed closed with signs that read, “This Office is Closed. Sorry we missed you” as Reuters reported.

Many New Yorkers were well informed about this upcoming day. A retired Metropolitan Transportation Authority worker Robert Fitzpatrick, 60, had spent $140,000, most of his life’s savings, on advertising for May 21 Judgment Day on Billboards throughout the city.

“God’s people are commanded to sound the warning, to sound the trumpet so to speak so people know,” Fitzpatrick spoke of his advertising campaign as he promoted also his book. On Saturday, he told a news agency that he would still have no doubt about the upcoming judgment.

Ocracoke Island Vacation Journal: Part 4

It’s our last day on the Island….

This week has flown by…

We had a great time at the wine tasting at “Zillie’s Pantry” last night.  Those events are always great fun.  Then we began a new tradition by going back to our friends Lee and Michael’s cottage where Lee made us a great pasta dinner.  So much better than calling out for pizza as in previous years…

Today, we had lunch at “Jason’s” then drove down to the Cape Hatteras ferry dock just to see if anything was new.  It wasn’t.  We did enjoy a walk through the dunes out to the beach and a great view of the sound.  The scenery here really is breath-taking.

We still hope to make it to Springer’s Point later today when we take the bikes back.  Then dinner at “The Flying Melon” one last time for this trip.

Then the ferry ride to Swan’s Quarter tomorrow and the drive back to reality.

Sometimes, the ferry rides are the most interesting parts of the trip.  But the excitement is usually coming to, not leaving, Ocracoke.

Last year there were a group of drunk East Carolina University students on board.  One young lady decided to spend the crossing in the cab of their truck with her boyfriend.  The entire ferry had a show we used to only see at the porno drive in movies…

This year, we only had a bicycle club on the ferry with us coming out to Ocracoke.  They just  brought the entire contents of REI Sporting Goods with them.  It wasn’t nearly as entertaining…

It’s been a great trip with great food, beautiful scenery, peace and quiet- and time to spend with friends and to read and relax.  It’s been too short….

We just reserved the house again for next year….

“Made in America”: The Comeback – Yahoo! Finance

A little good news….

U.S. exports hit a record $173 billion in March, up 15% from a year-ago and 37% from 2009. The good times for “Made in America” are just getting started, according to a new study from The Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

In fact, BCG predicts 2015 will be a tipping point of sorts, when global manufacturers will view the U.S. as equal to if not better-than China, senior partner Harold Sirkin tells me in the accompanying video.

“We’re not saying the world’s going to suddenly change and U.S. companies are going to manufacture here for shipment to China,” Sirkin says. “But the U.S. will be a very important place if you’re going to sell into the U.S.”

In making this seemingly outrageous forecast, Sirkin cites the following:

Rising wages in China plus the strengthening yuan are eroding China’s cost advantage vs. the U.S.

America’s “very productive, motivated and flexible workforce” is attractive to employers and all aspects of U.S. society — including unions and state governments — are “focused on creating jobs.”

Intangibles such as the length of the supply chain and the challenges of communicating over multiple time zones work to the advantage of the U.S. (The same is true of Mexico, which BCG says is “also poised to benefit as a low-cost alternative” to China.)

For the record, BCG’s forecast is based on the U.S. regulatory and tax environment remaining the same. This is about “pure economics,” Sirkin says. “If you improve tax rates and regulation, it’ll only make the trend happen faster.”

Clearly this forecast runs against conventional wisdom. But conventional wisdom also holds that America “doesn’t make anything anymore,” which isn’t true either. Since 1972, U.S. manufacturing output has risen nearly 2.5 times, according to BCG.

But U.S. manufacturing employment has fallen nearly 25% in the same time period and few consumer goods are made here anymore, which is why it “feels” worse than the reality; if BCG is even half right, that’s going to change for the better soon.

The Verdict of Public Opinion Is In: No Virgins in Paradise for Bin Laden

Well, I guess it’s nice to know we all finally agree on something….

Even in a Fox News poll…

From Poll Watcher:

Since the rise of Islamic extremism, there has been a much-repeated belief that Muslim martyrs would go to Heaven and be rewarded with 72 virgins, although scholars have argued that this was a mistranslation of a word in the Koran that really meant “raisins.” But even if accurate, an overwhelming majority of Americans don’t believe that Osama Bin Laden will enjoy those pleasures.

How do we know that?

A Fox News poll conducted May 15-17 about the killing of Bin Laden asked the usual stuff about whether voters thought it was the best outcome and whether President Obama was taking the right amount or too much credit.

Then it slipped in this question:

Do you believe Osama Bin Laden was greeted by 72 virgins in Heaven or did he meet a more negative end?

(We suppose the “negative end” was having to make do with the raisins after a career of death and destruction and life on the lam).

Eighty percent said he had met a negative end and only 3 percent believed he was greeted by the virgins. Seventeen percent admitted they didn’t know.

Democrats, Republicans and independents, for once, were all in agreement: no virgins.
