Online Ads More Likely To Deliver Malware Than Surfing Porn Sites

Sounds like porn sites have been getting an undeservedly bad rep…

At least as far as being a source of computer viruses….

Not that I would know anything about this, of course….

Sounds like the real spyware danger may come from Google shopping!

Which I know entirely too much about….

Interesting story from ThinkProgress.com:

Your online habits may be less dangerous than you think if they involve the less savory aspects of the web: According to Cisco’s annual 2013 Security Report internet users are 182 times more likely to get malware from clicking on online ads than visiting a porn site. It turns out, the site on the gray or black market edges of the web most of us traditionally think of as dangerous aren’t the biggest threats to your online security, instead:

“The dangers […] are often hidden in plain sight through exploit-laden online ads that are distributed to legitimate websites, or hackers targeting the user community on the common sites they use most.”

Those common sites include online shopping and search engines, which were 21 and 27 times more likely respectively to deliver malicious content than counterfeit software sites according to Cisco. Unsurprisingly, the Pew Internet & American Life Project reports of the 81% of American adults who use the internet some 91 percent report using search engines to find information and 71 percent buy products online.

Gomer Pyle Gets Hitched: Jim Nabors Marries His Longtime Male Partner

Well, no one saw this coming….

That’s sarcasm, in case you missed it….

Anyway, congratulations to Jim Nabors!

Mayberry will never be the same….

From WBTV Charlotte:

Jim Nabors, the Hawaii resident well known for his starring role in the 1960s television sitcom “Gomer Pyle, USMC,” married his longtime male partner early this month, he told Hawaii News Now Tuesday.

Nabors, 82, said he married his companion of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader, who’s 64, in Seattle on Jan. 15.

Nabors declined an on-camera interview but spoke to Hawaii News Now by phone.

“I’m 82 and he’s in his 60s and so we’ve been together for 38 years and I’m not ashamed of people knowing, it’s just that it was such a personal thing, I didn’t tell anybody,” Nabors said. “I’m very happy that I’ve had a partner of 38 years and I feel very blessed.  And, what can I tell you, I’m just very happy.”

Nabors said he and Cadwallader traveled to Washington state, where gay marriages became legal in early December 2012. They were married at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle.

A judge performed the marriage ceremony in the privacy of their hotel room with a couple of friends who live down the street from them near Diamond Head as witnesses, Nabors said.

Before they were married, Nabors said, “It’s pretty obvious that we had no rights as a couple, yet when you’ve been together 38 years, I think something’s got to happen there, you’ve got to solidify something.  And at my age, it’s probably the best thing to do.”

For Your Consideration: Anne Hathaway

Let me start by saying, I love Anne Hathaway.  I find her extremely talented, likable, poised and attractive.  She is one of my favorite actresses and I see everything she does.

Criticizing her is almost like kicking a kitten….

But….

I’ve never seen such a blatant Oscar campaign as the one waged on her behalf this year….

She was very good in “Les Miz”, but not great….and that’s partly the Director’s fault.  Too many tight shots over blew the performances quite a bit and I was not thrilled with some of his other choices.  I thought Samantha Barks and Eddie Redmayne gave the best performances in the film.

“Lincoln” was also a flawed film, but with some great performances-especially by Daniel Day Lewis.  If I could vote, I wouldn’t vote for it for Best Picture either-“Argo” would be my choice.  But I would surely vote for Sally Field, over the lovely Anne, for Best Supporting Actress.  Ms Field was just wonderful as Mary Todd Lincoln and did the almost impossible- made me forget I was watching Sally Field.

Again, I love Anne Hathaway.  Her day on the podium will come, realistically, probably in a couple of weeks.  She’s definitely still the favorite.

But it should be later and for a better role and performance in a better film.

And unexpected upsets to the front runner have happened before.  Ask Lauren Bacall….

Anyway, what do I know?

In any event, here is a great parody of Anne’s campaign by the very talented Emma Fitzpatrick.

Thanks to my FB friend, Chris, for first posting it for me to see….

Underwear Sales Increase, Suggesting A Rebounding Economy

Here is some encouraging polling news….

From the HuffingtonPost:

WASHINGTON — There is an old saying among economists that the best way to assess the state of the economy is to look at people’s underwear.

OK, there’s no such saying. But when he served as chairman of the Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan did use the sales of male underpants as a way to take the temperature of the country’s economic well being. And if the Maestro were to take a peek right now, he’d find evidence that things are gradually improving.

The NPD Group, Inc., a leading market research company, has shown an uptick in sales of men’s underwear over the past year. Between Aug. 2010 and Aug. 2011, sales for all men’s “underwear bottoms” were roughly $2.074 billion. In the period between Aug. 2011 and Aug. 2012, that number was $2.194 billion. That represents a 6 percent jump in sales from year to year.

Looking closer at the data, specific undergarment companies are flourishing in the current economy. HanesBrands Inc., for example, has seen underwear sales increase steadily over the past three years, climbing from $1.83 billion in 2009 to $2.01 billion in 2010 to $2.06 billion in 2011, according to SEC files. Sales for the first half of 2012 — the most recent available data — are also stronger, coming in at $1.17 billion, compared to $1.15 billion in the first half of 2011. The company’s stock price, which hit a 6-month low of $24.78 per share on May 18, was over $33 per share on Monday.

Limited Brands Inc., the parent company of Victoria’s Secret, does not separate that company’s revenues from those of its other brand names, like Bath and Body Works. The company’s overall store sales for the first half of 2012, however, were up 8 percent from the first half of 2011, according to its latest earnings statement, and it saw its stock price rise from $45.11 on May 18 to more than $50 on Monday.

Greenspan’s theory on underwear sales as an economic indicator was fairly straightforward.

“If you look at sales of male underpants it’s just pretty much a flat line, it hardly ever changes,” NPR’s Robert Krulwich explained of the theory, after Greenspan’s book “The Age Of Turbulence” was published. “But on those few occasions where it dips that means that men are so pinched that they are deciding not to replace underpants. And [Greenspan] said ‘that is almost always a prescient, forward impression that here comes trouble.'”

In 2009, that certainly was the case. In April of that year, as The Huffington Post reported, the leading global research company Mintel produced a study showing a 2.3 percent drop in sales of all men’s underwear products in 2009. The recession had come quickly and unexpectedly. In November 2008, Mintel had forecast underwear sales to grow by 2.6 percent in 2009.

Men, in short, were cutting back so dramatically on their spending habits that they were no longer buying underwear regularly. Three years later, with the economy showing some signs of growth — albeit slow growth — they’re splurging a bit more.

Rest in Peace, Andy Williams

I can’t let Andy Williams’ passing go by without comment…

He and his music and TV show were so much a part of my childhood….

His Christmas Album is still one of my favorites…

And his version of “Moon River” is the definitive version of the 1960’s- except for Audrey Hepburn in the film.

And the gracious way he stood by his ex-wife, and the mother of his children,  Claudine Longet during her scandalous murder trial…

Even if he was a Republican, he was friends with Bobby and Ethel Kennedy….

He was a Gentleman…

I’ll miss him….

Here is a link to a great remembrance from Suzi Parker in the Washington Post:

Jeremy Renner Slams The Kardashians

I’m loving Jeremy Renner more and more as time goes by…..

Especially as television reality shows get worse and worse….

We all need to stand up against this celebration of cultural decline….

I’m still in shock over something called the Honey Boo Boo Child that apparently has a TV show.  At least according to some very scary posts I saw on FaceBook….

I really wish I didn’t know about these things–Kardashians, the Jersey Shore People and Honey Boo Boo’s…..

It’s all one big celebration of being vulgar, tacky, trashy and just plain common….

Where are Audrey Hepburn, Jacqueline Kennedy and Grace Kelly when you need them?

From The Huffington Post:

Jeremy Renner joins the growing list of actors to express an extreme distaste for the Kardashians.

In a recent interview with the U.K. paper The Guardian, the “Bourne Legacy” star claimed that he never wanted to be famous, and while discussing the pitfalls of fame he unleashed his disdain for the reality TV family.

When the Kardashian name was mentioned by the interviewer, Renner reportedly rolled his eyes and then called them “ridiculous people with zero talent who spend their lives making sure everyone knows their name,” adding that they are “stupid, stupid people.”

Political Animals

There is a new series called “Political Animals” premiering on USA Network Sunday night….

I heard an interview with Sigourney Weaver on NPR this morning and I’m intrigued…

It also stars Ellen Burstyn….

Hard to tell how it’s going to turn out from what I’ve seen and heard so far, but I’m going to try to watch and find out….

It’s probably either going to be total trash or extremely good….or both!

Fireworks Blow Off Part Of Man’s Genitals

Today seems to be weird news day….

I hate fireworks.  Probably because my Mother always screamed about the possibility of them blowing off your fingers…

Somehow, she didn’t cover this risk…..

Back in those days, well-breed Southern Ladies did not discuss penises, so that was probably the reason.

But this would have really been a deterrent!

From Huffington Post:

Let this be a warning to those who take firework safety lightly.

Authorities told MLive that a Michigan man blew off part of his genitals with fireworks last Monday.

Assistant Chief Terry Flynn of the Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department told The Huffington Post that his men responded to the scene and discovered the unidentified man “bleeding profusely from the genitals.”

Flynn said the man lit a mortar and, when it didn’t go off, he walked towards it only to have it blow up between his legs.

Flynn declined to give the man’s name or release his medical condition, citing medical privacy laws.

Funeral Home In South Carolina To Sell Starbucks Coffee

Well, I’ve seen Taco Bell’s in Gas Stations, but nothing like this….

Personally, if you are going to combine food and beverage services with a Funeral Home, I would prefer a bar…

From The Huffington Post:

EASLEY, S.C. — A funeral home in northwestern South Carolina will be offering what it calls the Starbucks experience to those needing comfort, or just a cup of coffee.

Robinson Funeral Home in Easley is building a coffee shop attached to the funeral home.

The Coffee Corner will feature Starbucks coffee and food and also will be open to those who don’t need services from the funeral home. Chris Robinson says the Coffee Corner will include a fireplace, TV and Wi-Fi.

Starbucks employees will train employees at the funeral home later this month before the shop opens.

Robinson says there’s nothing like food or coffee to help comfort those who’ve experienced a loss.
