The Real Paul Ryan Is Bad for America

Well, I called it correctly yesterday:  Joe Biden destroyed the well packaged, but vacuous stuffed suit that was Paul Ryan last night.  People finally started to see the real Paul Ryan- shallow, callow and not ready for prime time.

Finally, someone has called Paul Ryan to task and tried to make him answer for his glib, destructive positions with real facts and force him to step out from behind the smoke and mirrors that the GOP uses to disguise the very bad impacts of their very bad ideas.

And most of these very bad ideas come directly from Paul Ryan-with an assist from Ayn Rand.

Joe Biden really took him to task like the differential DC media always fails to do…

My favorite comment came from Bill  Maher:

“9-1-1 ?  There is an old man beating a child on my TV.”

Now, I’m sure the Conservatives will start blaming Martha Raddatz, the moderator, and everyone else in the media like they normally do when someone doesn’t let them get away with their tricks and lies…

There is a great piece from Charles Pierce at Esquire.com this morning everyone should read.  Here is a brief excerpt and a link to the full article:

For years, Paul Ryan has been the shining champion of some really terrible ideas, and of a dystopian vision of the political commonwealth in which the poor starve and the elderly die ghastly, impoverished deaths, while all the essential elements of a permanent American oligarchy were put in place. This has garnered him loving notices from a lot of people who should have known better. The ideas he could explain were bad enough, but the profound ignorance he displayed on Thursday night on a number of important questions, including when and where the United States might wind up going to war next, and his blithe dismissal of any demand that he be specific about where he and his running mate are planning to take the country generally, was so positively terrifying that it calls into question Romney’s judgment for putting this unqualified greenhorn on the ticket at all. Joe Biden laughed at him? Of course, he did. The only other option was to hand him a participation ribbon and take him to Burger King for lunch.

You know what’s the difference between Sarah Palin and Paul Ryan?

Premature Desperation

Personally, I’m hoping Joe Biden destroys Paul Ryan tonight.

Paul doesn’t do well when challenged or criticized.  He’s like one of those GenX kids who is used to getting a ribbon for coming in 10th place…

And the intellectual competition isn’t exactly stiff within the modern Republican Party.

Still, no matter what happens tonight, lets keep our perspective and not run down the street hysterically screaming that the sky is falling.  That’s something the Democrats do very well….

I somehow think Paul will be a whimpering mass of personal outrage before the night is out, but just in case…

Here is a great Reality Check from Charles Blow in the New York Times:

Hey you! Come down off that ledge. Let’s talk this through. It’s not as bad as it seems.

Yes, the president’s performance in the last debate was, to put it mildly, unfortunate. Yes, Mitt Romney plowed over the truth like road kill and drove away free as a bird. Yes, the narrow swath of voters in the middle — many of whom may be low-information, low-engagement voters — responded to Romney’s forcefulness and were put off by the president’s passivity. Yes, Romney got a post-debate bump.

Yes, yes, yes, yes. But that doesn’t mean all is lost. It isn’t.

Romney’s post-debate bounce essentially wiped out Obama’s post-convention bounce so we’re pretty much back to where we started: a tight race in which the president holds a narrow lead when all polls are taken together, but also one in which he is still highly favored to win the electoral college.

Mark Hamill: Romney Looks Presidential, ‘but I cannot believe a word he says’

The Force is NOT with Romney….

Luke Skywalker has come out of retirement to speak out…..

And make some very good points….

From Rawstory.com:

“I debated in high school. If you told things that weren’t true or just made things out of whole cloth, you were penalized. It’s too bad they don’t apply the same standards to presidential candidates as they do to high school students,” he told Current TV host Cenk Ugyur.

Hamill said he was worried about low-information voters, who might not be aware of Romney’s penchant for changing his positions.

“I would cast this guy as the president in a heartbeat,” he added. “He’s got the hair, he’s got the stature, he’s got the wardrobe, but I just cannot believe a word he says.”

Google Search for ‘completely wrong’ Yields Page of Romney Photos

Try it!

Search Google with the term “completely wrong”….

I just tried it and it still comes up Romney!  I’m sure they will make them fix it soon….

From CNN.Com:

To the amusement of Mitt Romney’s critics, a Google Image search for the phrase “completely wrong” on Wednesday returned a page nearly full of images of the Republican presidential candidate.

A Google spokesman said the gallery of photos is the unintentional result of normal Google analytics, which produce images associated with popular phrases in news headlines and search terms, and not the result of any effort to skew the results.

In this case, Google’s algorithms picked up on news coverage of Romney saying last week he was “completely wrong” when he made controversial statements last spring that 47% of Americans were “victims” and dependent on government. Romney took some political heat for the original comments, which were captured by a hidden camera at a private fundraiser in May and made public last month.

Underwear Sales Increase, Suggesting A Rebounding Economy

Here is some encouraging polling news….

From the HuffingtonPost:

WASHINGTON — There is an old saying among economists that the best way to assess the state of the economy is to look at people’s underwear.

OK, there’s no such saying. But when he served as chairman of the Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan did use the sales of male underpants as a way to take the temperature of the country’s economic well being. And if the Maestro were to take a peek right now, he’d find evidence that things are gradually improving.

The NPD Group, Inc., a leading market research company, has shown an uptick in sales of men’s underwear over the past year. Between Aug. 2010 and Aug. 2011, sales for all men’s “underwear bottoms” were roughly $2.074 billion. In the period between Aug. 2011 and Aug. 2012, that number was $2.194 billion. That represents a 6 percent jump in sales from year to year.

Looking closer at the data, specific undergarment companies are flourishing in the current economy. HanesBrands Inc., for example, has seen underwear sales increase steadily over the past three years, climbing from $1.83 billion in 2009 to $2.01 billion in 2010 to $2.06 billion in 2011, according to SEC files. Sales for the first half of 2012 — the most recent available data — are also stronger, coming in at $1.17 billion, compared to $1.15 billion in the first half of 2011. The company’s stock price, which hit a 6-month low of $24.78 per share on May 18, was over $33 per share on Monday.

Limited Brands Inc., the parent company of Victoria’s Secret, does not separate that company’s revenues from those of its other brand names, like Bath and Body Works. The company’s overall store sales for the first half of 2012, however, were up 8 percent from the first half of 2011, according to its latest earnings statement, and it saw its stock price rise from $45.11 on May 18 to more than $50 on Monday.

Greenspan’s theory on underwear sales as an economic indicator was fairly straightforward.

“If you look at sales of male underpants it’s just pretty much a flat line, it hardly ever changes,” NPR’s Robert Krulwich explained of the theory, after Greenspan’s book “The Age Of Turbulence” was published. “But on those few occasions where it dips that means that men are so pinched that they are deciding not to replace underpants. And [Greenspan] said ‘that is almost always a prescient, forward impression that here comes trouble.'”

In 2009, that certainly was the case. In April of that year, as The Huffington Post reported, the leading global research company Mintel produced a study showing a 2.3 percent drop in sales of all men’s underwear products in 2009. The recession had come quickly and unexpectedly. In November 2008, Mintel had forecast underwear sales to grow by 2.6 percent in 2009.

Men, in short, were cutting back so dramatically on their spending habits that they were no longer buying underwear regularly. Three years later, with the economy showing some signs of growth — albeit slow growth — they’re splurging a bit more.

Mendacity

Frankly, I’m pretty fed up with this election season-especially with Mitt Romney and his lies.

He is such a blatant and unashamed liar- the like of which I have never seen before outside of a used car lot…

I can’t quite believe people are letting him get away with it….

And it seems to be becoming the modus operandi of the modern Republican Party.

I can’t decide if people are not informed, lazy or just don’t care anymore….

Lying- or Mendacity-  has just become an accepted  part of our daily lives….

Made me think of this famous scene from “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”.

Glenn Beck: God Put Romney Behind in Polls to Prove It’s a Miracle When He Wins

Whatever….

From TheRawStory.com:

Conservative talk show host Glenn Beck says that GOP hopeful Mitt Romney’s poll numbers have fallen as a part of a plan from God to make it obvious to the American people that divine intervention was responsible when Republicans take the White House in November.

Republican Congressional Aide Arrested for Assaulting Lindsay Lohan

This is just too rich- and trashy- for words…

A Republican Congressional Aid partying with Lindsay Lohan and assaulting her?

The Conservatives and the Religious Right are going to love this….

Or they may just be happy, at least this time, it’s a Republican misbehaving with a woman….

This time…..

From RawStory.com:

Christian LaBella, who is listed as a legislative correspondent in the office of Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL) and who staff confirmed “has worked” for the Congressman, was arrested Sunday morning on charges that he assaulted actress Lindsay Lohan after a night of partying. The charges were dropped and the arrest voided on Sunday afternoon, reportedly because Lohan did not received medical attention.

The dispute allegedly arose after a night of clubbing in New York City when Lohan discovered that LaBella had taken pictures of her on his cell phone and attempted to delete them. Lohan reportedly told police that he threw her on the bed and scratched her, after which she fled her room at the W Hotel in Union Square. She then apparently told police that LaBella attempted to choke her outside of her hotel room, and she pulled the fire alarm.

LaBella was picked up by police upon exiting the stairwell.

‘Honey Boo Boo’ is More Popular Than Republicans

This is a little dated, but I just saw it…

I really try to pretend I don’t know about Honey Boo Boo as her whole show/concept really scares me….

Funny….I would assume Honey Boo Boo and the GOP drew from the same Red State demographics, but she’s the clear winner….

It’s sad when more people want to see Honey Boo Boo Child than the Republicans’ convention.  Sad for the GOP….

Of course, she seems much more real than Mittens…

And maybe the working class folks are finally catching on to the GOP lies and tuning them out for something else….

Honey Boo Boo has become more relevant than the Republican Presidential Nominee….

Funny world….

From ABC News:

Mitt Romney and company couldn’t beat the allure of a self-proclaimed “redneck” family. According to Nielsen overnight ratings, TLC’s controversial reality show “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” drew 2.9  million viewers Wednesday night at 10 p.m. In second place: Fox News’ coverage of the Republican National Convention, to which 1.2 million adults tuned in.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Honey Boo Boo” scored more viewers in the key 18- to 49-year-old  demographic than the RNC coverage on any one of the  individual broadcast networks.

After Nearly A Decade Of Declines, Manufacturing Jobs Begin Rebound

This is some really good news….

Manufacturing jobs are middle class jobs with benefits that I was starting to fear were gone for good.

This will really help people feel better about the economy as these jobs beat the hell out of the retail, temp and other low wage jobs that have been the recent sources of job growth.

From Thinkprogress.org:

After nearly a decade of steep declines, American manufacturing jobs have begun to rebound since the beginning of the Obama administration, as the slide that occurred under President George W. Bush and during the Great Recession has largely been reversed.

Manufacturing slumped in the first year of the Obama administration as the nation dealt with the effects of the recession, but since then, manufacturing has posted job gains in all but three months since February 2010, as Bloomberg Government reports:

The BGOV Barometer shows U.S. factory positions have grown since early 2010, arresting a slide that began toward the end of the 1990s. It’s the best showing since the era of Bill Clinton, the only president in the last 30 years to leave office with more factory jobs than when he began.
