A Review: “My Fair Lady” at Triad Stage: It’s Loverly

Run, don’t walk, to see “My Fair Lady” at Triad Stage, our local Regional Theatre and Equity company,  here in Greensboro, North Carolina.  It’s truly loverly….

I’ve seldom left Triad Stage in a better mood.  This is a beautiful production.

I must admit, I went tonight with a sense of trepidation.  I wasn’t sure they could pull off a show this big and well known-especially one so closely associated with actors like Rex Harrison, Julie Andrews and Audrey Hepburn. But they did it!

The cast was uniformly excellent.  Michael McKenzie was wonderful stepping into Rex Harrison’s iconic shoes.  He made Henry Higgins his own.  Julia Osborne’s Eliza was enchanting and not just beautifully sung, but beautifully acted.  Nick Cartell really delivered “On the Street Where You Live”.  Bill Raulerson was great as Pickering as was Joseph Gordon Weiss as both Alfred Doolittle and Mrs. Higgins.  Yes, Mrs Higgins.  Rosie McGuire showed real presence as Mrs Pearce and in other small roles.

These folks, and the rest of the cast, well-deserved the standing ovation they received tonight for making a show this big work with only 10 actors who played multiple parts.  And it all worked because of Bryan Congers beautiful direction of a big show in a small space.  He made me realize it really wasn’t a show about spectacle and a big cast, but about characters, as is all great theatre.  This show really works well in the space at Triad Stage, mainly because of his direction.  It could not have been easy to do….

This is such a well written show with so many beautiful songs.  And the songs worked great with just two pianos.  I didn’t miss the big orchestrations.

This production made me rethink and appreciate this show in a new way.  It really works in this small, intimate space and on the three quarter round stage.  The set, as always, was impressive and perfect.  I thank all the folks involved for  an evening of great theatre.

I’ll say it again, if you can find a way to see this show- and still get a ticket- you won’t have a better night at the theatre any time soon.

In closing, I must say, I haven’t always left Triad Stage happily lately.  There have been some major misfires in recent seasons-especially this season.  More and more often, I’ve left unhappy and actually angry at how they misused their talent and resources.  Tonight was not one of those nights…

In fact, tonight was a little bittersweet.  We’ve decided, after 12 years as Season Ticket holders at Triad Stage, not to renew our season tickets.  We have seen every single show they have ever produced on the main stage.  This show almost- almost- makes me regret that choice not to come back again for the full season next year.

If next season were anywhere close to as inspiring as this show, we would be renewing.  But, alas, next season is not enticing and there have been too many misses lately.  I really wish they had a better season coming up to build on the momentum they will get out of this great production.  “Pump Boys and Dinettes” is not a good choice as a follow-up show to “My Fair Lady” for the musical slot on the season next year and I don’t want to see “Wait Until Dark” yet again.  “The Mountaintop” got dreadful reviews, for the play itself, in New York.  There were so many better options for their next season.  And I’m tired to death of all the Appalachian stuff.  Enough is enough.  I refuse to sit through any more of it….

We’ll pick and choose what we see at Triad Stage next year.  And hopefully future seasons will entice us back as Season Ticket holders, just not next year….

Still, tonight was just loverly….

Don’t miss this production….

It’s almost restored my faith in Triad Stage.

Justin Bieber: ‘Anne Frank Was A Great Girl, Hopefully She Would Have Been A Belieber’

I agree with some of the comments on this, particularly, “What a little idiot”….

It’s bad enough he has to inflict his homogenized “music” on a generation, now he thinks he can comment on every subject…

And, of course he responds based on how it all relates to him…

I bet he can’t even spell “holocaust”….

The worst things about these baby “stars” is the are taught the entire world centers on them and they get no education….

If his parents weren’t so greedy, the would make him take a break and go back to school.  Starting in a remedial Kindergarten…

It’s just a matter of time before he becomes the next Lindsay Lohan….

From HuffingtonPost.com:

This kind of makes us cringe.

Justin Bieber stopped by the Anne Frank House on Friday (April 12), touring the Amsterdam hiding place of the young Holocaust victim and diarist. But it wasn’t his appearance that got people talking — it was his comments.

According to the Anne Frank House’s Facebook page, the 19-year-old singer — who is now on the European leg of his Believe tour and performed in the nearby Dutch city of Arnhem in the Netherlands on Saturday night — left a message in the museum’s guestbook, writing:

“Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber.”

The comment stirred up a lot of conversation on social media, with people calling Bieber “a little idiot” who is “way too full of himself.”

Michele Presnell, N.C. Lawmaker, Opposes Islamic Prayer

More bad publicity for the State of North Carolina…

This is from one the latest batch of GOP idiots elected to the State Legislature last election- when the Democrats stayed home….

Elections have consequences and that one had big ones- it handed the State Legislature to the GOP along with the power to gerrymander the districts to make it safe for people like this to keep their seats…

But this woman is just beyond stupid…

But if you click the link and look at her picture….

From TalkingPointsMemo.com:

A Republican legislator in North Carolina told a constituent that she has misgivings with an Islamic prayer being conducted before a legislative meeting because she doesn’t “condone terrorism,” the Raleigh News & Observer reported Wednesday.

In an email exchange obtained by the News & Observer, state Rep. Michele Presnell (R) was responding to a constituent who asked her if she is comfortable with a prayer to Allah taking place before the meeting.

“No, I do not condone terrorism,” Presnell responded to the constituent.

Presnell did not immediately respond to TPM’s request for comment.

The constituent was taking Presnell to task over an ACLU lawsuit against a North Carolina county over Christian prayers being conducted before commissioners meetings there. That lawsuit was the impetus for a bill that would nullify any federal ruling on prayer in the state, on which Presnell is a co-sponsor.

Missouri Man Arrested at Hospital for Refusing to Leave Gay Partner

Another clear example of why we need Gay Marriage to be recognized….

From RawStory.com:

A gay man was arrested at a hospital in Missouri this week when he refused to leave the bedside of his partner, and now a restraining order is preventing him from any type of visitation.

Roger Gorley told WDAF that even though he has power of attorney to handle his partner’s affairs, a family member asked him to leave when he visited Research Medical Center in Kansas City on Tuesday.

Gorley said he refused to leave his partner Allen’s bedside, and that’s when security put him in handcuffs and escorted him from the building.

“I was not recognized as being the husband, I wasn’t recognized as being the partner,” Gorley explained.

He said the nurse refused to confirm that the couple shared power of attorney and made medical decision for each other.

“She didn’t even bother to look it up, to check in to it,” the Lee’s Summit resident recalled.

In a 2010 memorandum, President Barack Obama ordered hospitals that receive Medicare or Medicaid funding to allow visitation rights for gay and lesbian partners.

Rand Paul “Educates” Black People…And Proves He’s An Ignorant, Elitist, Entitled White Man- Again…..

Rand Paul is truly an idiot….

People just didn’t realize it in time to prevent him from becoming a Senator….

The good news is, the Peter Principle has kicked in:  He has reached- and surpassed- his level of incompetence….

And he’s illustrating it on the national stage….

From ThinkProgress.org:

On Wednesday morning, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) gave an address at the historically-black Howard University designed to convince black voters to support Republicans. While some of his remarks, most notably on harsh drug laws and other civil liberties issues, were well-received, the majority of the speech consisted in Paul condescendingly explaining American racial history to the audience, occasionally incorrectly, and expecting that it would open black voters’ eyes to the real Republican Party. Here are five moments that encapsulated the general problem with Paul’s speech:

Men’s Bikini Wax Preference? NOT A Brazilian, Poll Finds

Way TMI….

From the “I’m glad I’m Gay” files….

And I have enough close women friends to know some of them spend way too much time worrying about this…..

From the HuffingtonPost.com….

Raise your hand if you’ve ever gotten a bikini wax.

Now raise your hand if you’ve ever gotten a bikini wax simply because you thought that’s what guys wanted.

If you’ve got that hand in the air, we’ve got some good news: That guy might not care as much about your bikini line as you thought. Or he does care, but a full-on Brazilian wax might not be necessary. A new study commissioned by hair removal company Nad’s surveyed 1,000 men and found that their most preferred “look” was not a Brazilian, but rather “‘trimmed and tidy’ –- a well kept ‘lady garden.'”

43 percent of men polled said they preferred women’s hair natural with a “Bermuda triangle” (i.e. trimmed hair and waxed sides). 17 percent said they like a “landing strip,” 15 percent dig a heart shape, and only 12 percent said they prefer a full-on Brazilian (no hair at all).

Chapter 74: Big Fat Southern Weddings: Part 4 | My Southern Gothic Life

Final part of the “Southern Wedding” series is up on my other blog:

My sister’s reception was at the “Last Capital of the Confederacy.”  The Sutherlin Manson in Danville, Virginia.

Since we weren’t members of the Golf Club and neither my Mother or Sister were members of the Wednesday Club, options were limited.  This was kind of a coup…

The Sutherlin Manson was, officially, the Last Capitol of the Confederacy because, after the fall of Richmond and Petersburg, Confederate President Jefferson  Davis and his cabinet set up temporary residence there, for a few days, before fleeing further South.

We were taught it was a place of honor due to the valiant Confederacy’s last stand.  I later learned it was really where the Confederate Government hid out, for a few days,  before running somewhere else to avoid being hanged for treason….

Chapter 72: Big Fat Southern Weddings: Part 2 | My Southern Gothic Life

New post up on my other blog, My Southern Gothic Life:

There is no wedding like a home town wedding….

Back in the 1980′s, when most of my friends were trouping down to the altar, we had some moments that both solidified and threatened friendships that had existed for years. Since we had all known each other most of our lives, as opposed for only four years or so with my college friends, we had a tendency to pull fewer punches and react more immediately and honestly to situations.  We were, shall we say, earthier in our interactions.

NC House Republicans File Voter ID Bill

Here we go again….

And since there is no longer a Democratic Governor to veto this, it will probably pass this year….

Another attempt by the Republicans to block voters who don’t vote for them…

With demographic trends against them, the GOP’s only hope to stay in power is voter suppression- hence the bills to limit early voting, require voter ID and restrict College student voting….

They can’t continue to win on policy- even with their gerrymandered districts-so they are trying to win anyway they can-no matter the cost to Democracy…

From WRAL.com:

RALEIGH, N.C. — House Speaker Thom Tillis and Republican House leaders have filed a new proposal to require photo identification for voters.

House Bill 589, entitled the Voter Identification Verification Act, or VIVA, was filed Thursday afternoon, after what Tillis said was “a transparent and deliberative process” of seeking public input.

“This bill has had more discussion than anything in recent history,” said House Elections Committee Co-chairman Tim Moore.

Under the proposal, beginning in 2016, voters would be required to show a photo ID at the polls. The bill would allow “multiple forms of state-issued ID,” according to Rep. Tom Murry, R-Wake, including tribal cards, public university IDs and state employee IDs. Private university IDs would not qualify.

Voters without a photo ID will be allowed to cast a provisional ballot but would have to return to their local board of elections with a valid photo ID to have the ballot counted.
