Elizabeth Taylor at a Florida “Fat Farm”

I want to go!

This sounds like so much more fun than that “boot camp” stuff that’s the rage now for getting back into shape….

I was born too late…

From Maury Hopson in Vanity Fair:

When Elizabeth was living in Washington, D.C., during the late 70s, her spirits were not great. She spent a lot of time in bed, but not for the usual reasons. She and I joked that her only exercise was changing the TV channels with the remote—I told her she was going to end up with an overdeveloped thumb. Plus, the fried chicken, biscuits, and creamed gravy made by the wonderful chef in the downstairs kitchen were only an intercom call away.

When she would come up to New York, the photographers were always everywhere she went, and some unflattering photographs of her began to appear in the press. As her friend, I knew it was hurtful. So I talked to her about going to a spa to drop a few pounds and clean up a little. In those days, there weren’t rehabs all over the country like there are now—only luxurious “fat farms” where people voluntarily checked in to get in shape and stop drinking, all while being pampered with massages and facials. Not exactly where one went after an “intervention.” At the time, I had been to several of the more high-profile ones for fashion shoots with Glamour and Vogue.

Elizabeth reluctantly agreed to go, if I would go with her. I contacted a friend of mine at Vogue, who told me about a facility in Florida that was low-key and only a short flight from Washington. I flew down from New York, picked Elizabeth up, and off we went. The flight was stormy and terrible. We had one last drink. By the time we landed, we could have used another—but instead we just got into the car provided for us and drove in the dark to our little two-bedroom bungalow on the edge of the spa’s golf course. We toyed with the idea of naming it “Butterball 8,” but decided on “Butterfield Ate”—our home for the next three weeks.

Oprah on Broadway

Somehow, I just can’t see the Big O doing 8 shows a week….

I’ll wish her well and give her credit for trying….

She will surely pack the houses….

And anything that brings attention to live theatre is a good thing….

Oprah Winfrey has long said she would love to return to acting. But as her iconic, Chicago-based talk show approaches its final episode, Winfrey clearly is moving quickly to turn her dream of appearing on Broadway into reality.

“I have a stack of plays in my bag right now that I am reading,” Winfrey said with great enthusiasm and determination last week as part of a frank and wide-ranging interview on her Chicago past and professional future that will appear May 22 in a special section of the Tribune. “And just this past weekend, I was in New York meeting with producers. We were just talking about what would be the best route to take. But yes, this is really going to happen. … Life is too short.

“I think,” Winfrey said, “that an ensemble production is the way I should go.”

Winfrey was very nearly already acting on Broadway. Kenny Leon, the director of the high-profile Broadway revivals of “Fences” and “A Raisin in the Sun,” came to Winfrey about two years ago and said he wanted her to appear in “Fences.” Talks, Winfrey said, progressed to a advanced and serious stage.

“I had always wanted to do “Fences,” Winfrey said. “I went through the idea of trying to take my show to New York, shoot a show during the daytime and appear on Broadway at night. But I couldn’t do it. And finally, Kenny said he couldn’t wait any longer.”

So that didn’t work out. But once “The Oprah Winfrey Show” has wrapped, Winfrey will have a lot more freedom.

Arnold and Maria split: Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver to Separate

I’m amazed they lasted this long…

And it’s sad to see them split after this much time together…

Still, I can’t help but think how much Maria gave up–her career, for one thing– for Arnold.

She also is the one who gave him gravitas…

He wouldn’t have been governor without her…

I’ll be interested to see what she does with the next chapter of her life…

Him?  I don’t care too much…

Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife, Maria Shriver, have separated, with Shriver moving out of their Brentwood mansion while the two determine the next step in their 25-year marriage.

Shriver has been residing apart from the actor-turned-politician for the last few weeks. The former first couple confirmed the separation in a joint statement released Monday after questions were raised by The Times.

“This has been a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us,” the statement read. “After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion and prayer, we came to this decision together. At this time, we are living apart while we work on the future of our relationship.

“We are continuing to parent our four children together. They are the light and the center of both of our lives.” We consider this a private matter and neither we nor any of our friends or family will have further comment. “We ask for compassion and respect from the media and the public.”

He’s 50 today…

But he’ll always be the 30ish Chris to me…

Sales Of DVD, Blu-ray Plummet, Causing Consternation In Hollywood : The Two-Way : NPR

It’s all going digital….

I’m starting to suspect there may have been previous civilizations we will never know about because all their records were digital and disappeared into the air…

In any event, this is why I’m selling off our DVD’s on eBay while someone still wants them…

Of course, I have to keep a couple of hundred I can’t bear to part with…

The Financial Times has some troubling news for Hollywood: “Sales of new DVDs have collapsed, falling 20 percent [below the year-ag quarter] and presenting a significant challenge for Hollywood film studios, according to figures released on Monday.”

The drop is attributed to consumers favoring streaming online, buying a digital copy on iTunes or watching them through subscription services like NetFlix.

Could John Krasinski Be the Next George Clooney?

George Clooney turned 50 last week, so they have to start pushing him off to the graveyard…

Sorry, but this is a little premature.

He’s one of the few genuine Stars still out there.

He looks better now than he did when he was younger, he’s smart, he’s an excellent Director and a damn fine Actor.

He is going to be around for a while…

That said, I like John Krasinski a lot, too.  He’s a standout in today’s bland world of interchangeable young actors.

I think he’s going to be around for a while also….

I agree with some later observations in the attached article:  He’s much more of a Jack Lemon/Tom Hanks type…

I’ve never seen his TV show, but I found him very endearing in “It’s Complicated”….

John Krasinski isn’t the lead character of “Something Borrowed”, but you wouldn’t know that from the recent barrage of TV ads, all of which lean heavily on his presence to sell a story with an eyebrow-raising plot: Ginnifer Goodwin’s character sleeps with the fiancé of her best friend, played by Kate Hudson, but you’re still supposed to root for her. Meanwhile, Krasinski is the platonic fourth lead who occasionally comments on the action, but it’s a testament to his natural likability — and, perhaps, his big-screen potential — that the studio is putting its marketing campaign on his shoulders. As he continues to topline The Office after the departure of Steve Carell, it may even be a sign that he could follow in the footsteps of another refugee from NBC Thursday nights who made it big in the movies: George Clooney. To find out, we spoke to industry insiders to answer the question: If John Krasinski were a stock, would you buy, sell, or hold?

‘I Wanted A New Life,’ Says Actor, Author Rob Lowe : NPR

Okay…

I’ve fought against it.

I’ve resisted buying or reading this….

But…

I just went to Amazon and bought it…

When even NPR is taking it seriously, I now have acceptable cover…

From NPR:

Well before Rob Lowe made it to Hollywood, he’d gone out of his way to meet Liza Minelli: As a kid in Dayton, Ohio, he’d knocked on her hotel room door, and stayed to share a chat and some chocolates. As he left, Minelli told him, “See you in Hollywood, kid.”

And a few years later, he did make it to Hollywood — as one of its breakout stars.

But for all his success, Lowe is also a child of divorce, a veteran of alcoholism and an actor who has experienced many personal and public highs and lows. He’s chronicled his rocky ascension to stardom in a new memoir, Stories I Only Tell My Friends.

Jesse James Trashes Sandra Bullock in the Bedroom…

Can this man get any more despicable?

To say he is no gentleman is the understatement of the year….

And he’s been to rehab, so he can’t use being under the influence as an excuse…

The only answer is that he’s just trash…and Sandra’s well rid of him.

From Salon.com:

In case there was any question lingering in your mind whether Jesse James is still a raging jackass, his latest attempt at public relations should remove all doubt. Promoting his new memoir, “American Outlaw,” the man who cheated on America’s Sweetheart with a White Power enthusiast and then bragged of being “the most hated man in the world” seems determined to drum up even more ill will. During a Wednesday visit on Howard Stern’s Sirius show, Stern questioned the thrill-seeking entrepreneur/reality star about whether his fiancée, Kat Von D., was better in bed than Sandra Bullock, and James unhesitatingly replied, “That one’s an easy no-brainer … Yes sir, 100 percent.” Way to win back your public, James! Maybe he’s jealous of all the attention Osama bin Laden and Charlie Sheen have been getting lately.

Happy Birthday, Holly Golightly….

And Sabrina Fairchild, Maid Marian, Eliza Dolittle, Princesss Ann, Sister Luke, Regina Lampert and Joanna Wallace ….

By that I mean, Happy Birthday Audrey Hepburn.  She would have been 82 years old today…

There will never be another actress like her…

One of the things that always struck me about her as an actress was how well she listened….

She wasn’t a scene-stealer, she just quietly made an indelible impression.  You couldn’t take your eyes off her…

She was many things…Beautiful-inside and out.  Stylish-and style setter.   Elegant, yet down to earth…

She survived the horrors of World War II to conquer Broadway and Hollywood….

And walked away from the top of the box office to raise her children….

She came back as an occasional actress, but a full time goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations.

And she’ll alway live on film:
