Man Tries to Escape Rest Home in Dumpster

I hope my Mother doesn’t see this and get any ideas….

From GoDanRiver.com:

A Caswell County, N.C., man was injured Friday morning after hiding in a Dumpster to escape a rest home.

Lt. Frank Rose of the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office said the man — who has not been identified — was hiding in the trash bin to escape the rest home he had been living in for the last two months.

While he was hiding, he was dumped into the back of a garbage truck during normal trash collection Friday.

Rose said the truck made a few stops before the man started beating on the inside of the truck to let the driver know he was back there.

A Caswell County Sheriff’s Office deputy was called to the scene when the garbage truck driver noticed the man was in the back.

Rose said the man was transported to Duke University Medical Center after complaining of injuries to his foot.

He will most likely be returned to the rest home, Rose said.

An Off-Duty Pilot, Helps Land Lufthansa Plane At Dublin Airport During Emergency

But where is Karen Black when you need her?

When the copilot of a Lufthansa flight was struck with a debilitating migraine while mid-air on Monday, the crew could have used a doctor — but what they got was a pilot.

Luckily, one brave passenger happened to work for North American Airlines, making him fully qualified to fly commercial aircraft.

“It was a miracle,” a source involved in the operation told Independent.ie. “It had all the elements of a Hollywood movie but thankfully one with a happy ending.”

Today, I’m Thankful for…..

Everyone seems to be posting a daily “what I’m Thankful for” update on Facebook.  That’s really not my style.  It’s a little too Hallmark and too mainstream for me.  If I posted one thing at a time, it would be too tempting to be snarky.  That would inevitably lead to me being called an ungrateful bitch by someone with no sense of humor and further result in me having to have one of those awful Facebook battles….

I’m grateful for many things, but don’t talk about it well.  I also have to put my gratitude into the context of my life as I’m lucky enough to live it.  For me it’s better to list the big and little things I’m thankful for all in one list.  It gives more context.   It’s also a better way for me to express myself.  That’s just the way I am– thoughtful, observant, a little deep, a little sentimental and somewhat happily shallow when I can get away with it…..

Here goes.  This is my list of things for which I’m very grateful- not necessarily in the order of importance- but in the context of the Holidays,  recent events and in my mind at this moment.  You can guess the real order….

  1. Brooks Brothers
  2. Online Shopping
  3. My partner Steve who has made the last almost 16 years the best years of my life
  4.  Our 4 twisted rescued pets
  5. Green Valley Grill’s  Take Out Thanksgiving service
  6. Our friends- old and new, present and past, sane and crazy who share this wonderful journey through life with us
  7. That our friends are bringing most of the rest of the Thanksgiving dinner that I’m not ordering from the Green Valley Grill
  8. That President Obama was re-elected
  9. Ralph Lauren
  10. The overall election results that showed an emerging, diverse country embracing hope and inclusion instead of selfishness and fear.
  11. Tarn-X Silver Polish and Haggerty’s Silver Paste
  12. A good job I usually love…
  13. Our families of Choice and of Birth- both of whom contribute so much to making us who we are and providing good blogging fodder
  14. Our neighborhood- full of fun, smart, caring, eclectic people.  Well, except for those few who put Romney signs in their yard…
  15. Good sidewalks for dog walking
  16. Ocracoke Island- that provides a once a year chance for us to get away from chain stores and franchise restaurants, our fast-paced life and have the chance to slow down and enjoy life in a special village off the North Carolina coast.
  17. The chance to travel-no matter how much I may complain about the process
  18. The Lexus dealership that keeps my 12 year 0ld car running so well that I don’t have to buy a new one
  19. That almost no one wears double knit polyester anymore
  20. LL Bean
  21. Our wonderful housekeeper and pet sitter who helps us manage our crazy lives
  22. That we don’t have to pay college tuition, but only vet bills
  23. That Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid exist and help so many people add a little more dignity and security to their lives
  24. Tranquillizers
  25. The Bestway Grocery store up the street and their great selection of good, cheap wines that I never mix with the above, in case you are wondering….
  26. That I live in a city of several colleges and Universities that values education and votes reliably Democratic to protect it.
  27. The Arts- all of them.  Local and Broadway, amateur and professional.  And all the artist struggling to express themselves in a world that is not often friendly to the Arts and Artists.
  28. My gym- the only one I’ve ever liked and that I need to get to more often.
  29. Yoga- that I need to do more often so I don’t need numbers 24 & 25 as often!
  30. Jon Stewart and Anderson Cooper
  31. Sarcasm
  32. The chance to enjoy all the many aspects of the Holiday seasons with people who value both the multi-cultural and traditional aspects of the season.
  33. Maria’s and Reto’s take away meals
  34. All the wonderful people I’ve reconnected with or met on Facebook and through my blogs, some that I may not have ever met in person, but who add so much fun and interest to my life with their comments, messages and posts
  35. That I don’t live in Arizona, Alabama or Mississippi
  36. Gas logs
  37. That I went to college at Washington and Lee University in beautiful little Lexington Virginia where I got a great education, started to learn to think more diversely and  met so many wonderful people both then and later through the W&L connection
  38. Sweaters.  Lots of sweaters….
  39. The ability to laugh at the ironies and complexities of life
  40. That I’m still here to enjoy it all….

Chapter 66: Mad About the Boy | My Southern Gothic Life

I’m being a little lazy on this blog, but much more prolific than usual on my other blog…

There is a new post upon MySoutherGothicLife.com.  Here is an excerpt and a link to the full post:

Everyone one should have one John Ashley in their life.  But only one…

One is a voyage of youthful self-discovery, more than one is a sign of self-destruction and co-dependency setting you up for an intervention…..

I truly hope everyone has one Bad Boy in their past…Someone who was a youthful fascination they had the good sense to not marry….

If you are young, my best advice is to read this and learn.  If you are with a John Ashley, enjoy the moment, but keep your sense of perspective.  Boys like this aren’t for the long haul of life…

Boys like John Ashley are of a time and a place in your life.  Remember that.  It will save you a lot of emotional pain and money for divorce attorneys.

That said, let’s talk about John Ashley.

October Surprise: Romney Lies, Under Oath, to Help Friend Protect Assets from Wife in Ugly Divorce

Of course it’s not surprise that Romney lies like a cheap rug…

Or that he considers women less than equal to men…

But that he lies under oath shows he’s surprisingly stupid….

Or feels he is so entitled oaths and laws don’t apply to him…

And helping rich friends keep their money always comes first….

What a scumbag….

From Salon.com:

Documents unsealed by a court in Massachusetts today show that Mitt Romney created a special share of stock to help a friend give his ex-wife less money during a nasty divorce, and then testified that she got a fair price, even though she made a fraction of what the shares were worth just a year later.

Romney testified that Tom Stemberg, the founder of Staples, had properly appraised the value of the company’s shares at $2.25 during the divorce. But a year later the share price closed at exactly 10 times that amount on the first day of its IPO.

As we noted yesterday, the divorce testimony was the “October Surprise” with the most potential to actually be surprising. It seems like it may not disappoint. While initial rumors that Romney lied about Staples’ value under oath appear overblown, the story is not particularly flattering at a time when both candidates are desperately trying to attract female voters.

How to Survive a Plague

There is a new documentary making the festival circuit called “How to Survive a Plague.”

It’s about the early days of ACT UP and people standing up to government inaction in the early days of the AIDS Crisis.  I’m old enough to remember those scary days of the 1980’s when young men were dying and the government was not taking any action to find out why or how to stop it.

Many people are alive today because of these brave activist of ACT UP.  They made the government, the health care industry and the pharmaceutical industry pay attention.  They were mad as hell and didn’t take it any more….

Where is that energy today?  Cynicism and acceptance of the status quo are way too prevalent now….

Here is the trailer.  I can’t wait to see this….

Big Bird’s Big Gay Love Story

Another reason for the Republicans to hate Big Bird:  He was created by two Gay men!

This may actually be the real reason the GOP hates him so much!

Wonderful article at the Daily Beast:

Lyall and Love were partners in work and life for half a century and in the 1980s traveled with Big Bird to the White House for the annual Easter egg roll. The most momentous results of that presidential nexus were the grass stains on Big Bird’s outsize feet. Nobody could have imagined that this puppet might someday play even the smallest role in deciding who would occupy the Oval Office.

“We’ll see,” Lyall says.

The possible political impact of this 8-foot-2 yellow plumed character takes a turn from the ridiculous to the delightfully apt when you consider this: Big Bird was the product of a profound partnership between two men that was in every way a marriage save for in the strictly legal sense that the law until very recently forbade.

“Where he was, I was,” Lyall says.

Teen Denied Eagle Scout for Being Gay

This is another example of institutional bullying…

This kid was involved in Scouting all his life.   Now, just as he has earned their highest level of achievement, they are turning on him because he is Gay.

This is the kind of kid who ought to be praised, not put down…

Please read the article, below, from RawStory.com and then sign his Mom’s petition at this link:

http://www.change.org/petitions/boy-scouts-don-t-let-your-anti-gay-policy-deny-my-son-his-eagle-award

The Boy Scouts of America on Thursday said that they had denied a gay California teen Eagle Scout honors because he had not lived up to the principle of “duty to God” with his sexual orientation. The Scoutmaster for Troop 212 in Moraga decided that Ryan Andresen was “no longer eligible for membership in Scouting” after they learned he was gay, even though he had completed all of his requirements for Eagle Scout, including building a “tolerance wall” to honor those that had been bullied like himself.“I want everyone to know that [the Eagle award] should be based on accomplishment, not your sexual orientation,” Ryan Andresen’s mother, Karen, told NBC News. “Ryan entered Scouts when he was six years old and in no way knew what he was.”“I think right now the scoutmaster is sending Ryan the message that he’s not a valued human being and I want Ryan to know that he is valued … and that people care about him,” she added.Karen Andresen said that the Eagle Scout decision was “a total shock” because the scoutmaster was aware that her son had come out in July and had said nothing.

Rest in Peace, Andy Williams

I can’t let Andy Williams’ passing go by without comment…

He and his music and TV show were so much a part of my childhood….

His Christmas Album is still one of my favorites…

And his version of “Moon River” is the definitive version of the 1960’s- except for Audrey Hepburn in the film.

And the gracious way he stood by his ex-wife, and the mother of his children,  Claudine Longet during her scandalous murder trial…

Even if he was a Republican, he was friends with Bobby and Ethel Kennedy….

He was a Gentleman…

I’ll miss him….

Here is a link to a great remembrance from Suzi Parker in the Washington Post:

The Party’s Over: Paul Ryan vs. The Stench

Sounds like it’s love on the rocks for Paul and Mitt…. and it was one short, unhappy affair.

I’m reading more and more on inside turmoil in the Romney campaign and how the stench of death is beginning to be evident to many GOP insiders….

But Paul Ryan really seems to be getting a little bitter about this…

Paulie seems to be starting to realize he might not have made the smartest career move to step into the limelight with Mittens…

He’s really sounding more and more like the spoiled frat boy he is….

At least in this satirical article from Roger Simon at Politico.com:

“I hate to say this, but if Ryan wants to run for national office again, he’ll probably have to wash the stench of Romney off of him,” Craig Robinson, a former political director of the Republican Party of Iowa, told The New York Times on Sunday.

Coming from a resident of Iowa, a state where people are polite even to soybeans, this was a powerful condemnation of the Republican nominee.

Though Ryan had already decided to distance himself from the floundering Romney campaign, he now feels totally uninhibited. Reportedly, he has been marching around his campaign bus, saying things like, “If Stench calls, take a message” and “Tell Stench I’m having finger sandwiches with Peggy Noonan and will text him later.”

Even before the stench article appeared, there was a strong sign that Ryan was freeing himself from the grips of the Romney campaign. It began after his disastrous appearance on Friday before AARP in New Orleans. Ryan delivered his remarks in the style dictated by his Romney handlers: Stand behind the lectern, read the speech as written and don’t stray from the script.
