Home Allegedly Set Afire in Neighbors’ Facebook Feud

I’ve seen some heated arguments on Facebook, but this takes the cake!

With Facebook friends like these, who needs enemies?

Police in Des Moines, Iowa, have arrested 30-year-old Jennifer Christine Harris (pictured left) for allegedly setting her neighbor’s house on fire, according to the Des Moines Register. The suspected motive? Retribution for being “de-friended” on the popular social networking site.

Nikki and Jim Rasmussen awoke to the sound of a loud “boom” around 1 a.m., officials said, and escaped the home just as the siding on their house began to melt.

When asked who might have caused the fire, Jim Rasmussen named Harris as the prime suspect. She and Nikki Rasmussen had a falling out on Facebook, he told police, when a party invitation that his wife volunteered to create for Harris yielded a high number of “declines.”

After a large volume of text and Facebook messages, the dispute escalated to the point where Nikki Rasmussen “de-friended” Harris. She and Harris had been the best of friends before the dispute, according to The Associated Press.

The Penis Patrol

Okay….if you are tired of hearing about Anthony’s Weiner, but want to continue to grow your knowledge in this general area, here is someone who has done much more research on the subject of penises in public life than anyone could ever possibly care to know.  He seems to see them everywhere….

I can’t quite believe this is real, but it is…

Anderson Cooper covered it, so it must be….

This continues to raise the question that has puzzled me for years:  Why are so-called “Straight Christian Men” so obsessed with Penises?

Breitbart Leaks Photo of Weiner’s Naked Penis

For once, Andrew Breitbart may have been right…

But he’s still pond scum…

Don’t even think this was accidental…

Most college fraternities are more mature than these guys….

And, as a Gay Man I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m so tired of hearing about penises…

From RawStory.com:

Although conservative publisher Andrew Breitbart initially promised to keep the most explicit picture of Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) to himself — barring certain actions by Weiner — an alleged picture of Weiner’s naked, erect penis nonetheless leaked out this morning.

During an appearance on Sirius XM Radio’s notoriously raunchy program The Opie and Anthony Show Wednesday, Breitbart reportedly showed the radio shock jocks the image that was saved on his iPhone. Though they now claim that they retrieved a still of the phone from a videotape of the show and that Breitbart didn’t allow them to photograph it, the original image, now removed from Yfrog, showed a thumb in the corner of the lens, as though it was taken from a cell phone camera. Yfrog was the image-sharing service to which Weiner sent the “joke” photo of him in his boxers that started the entire scandal.

The show Tweeted the photo to its official account and brought it to the attention of the gossip sites Gawker and WWTDD. The now-removed image [NSFW] is still available at Gawker.

At a press conference called by Weiner Monday, Breitbart admitted that he had been given a more explicit photo of Weiner, but said he was trying to do the “right thing” by not releasing it.

The conservative provocateur told NBC’s Matt Lauer Tuesday that he would release the photo “if Anthony Weiner decides to make it a jihad against me.”

“I don’t think I want to put his family through that type of thing,” Breitbart said. “I could put that out there and his career would have been over today.”

For his part, Weiner has thus far refused to resign, but has not commented on the release of the latest photo.

Woman Tattoo’s All FaceBook Friends Profile Pictures on Her Arm

Okay, I admit I just don’t get tattoo’s at all.  Maybe it was growing up around too many World War II vets who got them while they were drunk overseas and kept saying the wish they had never done it.

Maybe it’s because I’m so aware fashions change and these things are permanent.  I would hate to be stuck with the 1970’s fashions for the rest of my life…

Maybe it’s because I keep thinking that what looks cute on a tight 20-year-old body is really going to start looking like crap on a heavier, sagging 60-year-old body….

But what is this woman going to do if someone defriends her or changes their profile picture?

Another example that supports my concerns for the critical thinking skills of people today….

I just wish I knew of a company that will be able to remove these things in the future so I could invest in them now.  It would make for a most comfortable retirement…

UPDATE:  It has been reveled this was all a publicity stunt and the video is faked.  These are temporary tattoos that wash off in a couple of days….I trust no one decided to follow suit and do this in reality!!

And Then There’s Maude….

I can’t believe it’s been over 30 years since this show premiered.

I remember our neighbors were scandalized my parents let us watch it.

They weren’t liberal, merely lazy.

We all had TV’s in our rooms so we wouldn’t have to talk to each other….

Anyway…

Here it is…Thirty years later and it seems as relevant and fresh as can be…

Unfortunately…

You would think we would have moved farther and it would seem antiquated by now…

Still.  It was a great show and Bea Arthur was priceless….

And it was actually well written…

I had forgotten good network television was possible…

Doomsday Preacher Wrong in More Ways Than One – Leonard Pitts Jr.

Beautiful column from Leonard Pitts…

He points some of the things I don’t understand about these people focusing on the End of Times…

I still say we should all embrace this life- and not just focus on what happens next….

We’ll find out that answer eventually.

But the tendency to focus on the end is like looking through the wrong end of a telescope. It suggests mortality is a thing to be feared. Granted, one would never think this, much less say it when death breaks hearts and overflows eyes, when it strikes without warning or lingers above a sickbed, when it takes away the very young or the very loved, but a case can be made that mortality is really a gift of sorts.

The understanding that life is finite lends a bittersweet urgency to this business of living. Seasons change, years pile upon years, hair turns to silver and then to memory and in all of it, there is an undercurrent: get done what you came here to do, give the gifts you meant to give, do the good you’re able to do, say what you need to say, now, today, because everything you see is temporary, the clock is ticking and the alarm could go off any second.

Camping had it wrong in more ways than one. He told people to get ready for the end. Better they should live ready for the end.

The key word there being, live.

A Generation of Slackers? Not So Much

I found this article fascinating…

I’m one of those people quick to call the younger generation slackers.  They are entirely too coddled.  Hence, my loving reference to them among friends and on my blogs as SJI’s (Slack Jawed Idiots).

But I’m ready to admit that there are other factors that aren’t so obvious.  Technology has changed the world and removed walls and barriers.  It has made it easier to blur the lines between work life and home life.

This Generation also sees things differently due to, not only being coddled, but due to the vast amount of information this technology has made so easily available.

They also don’t have the expectations many of us from my generation had- past tense-of having a job for life as long as they worked hard.

They know that social contract is null and void.

They therefore, appropriately, focus more on their real life.

In short, it’s a different world than the one we expected to see…

They may be more realistic than my generation was…

I’ll have to think about this some more.  This article in today’s New York Times is a good place to start…

But it still doesn’t excuse their poor style, fashion and cultural choices…

And three in four Americans believe that today’s youth are less virtuous and industrious than their elders, a 2009 survey by the Pew Research Center found.

In a sign of humility or docility, young people agree. In that 2009 Pew survey, two-thirds of millennials said older adults were superior to the younger generation when it came to moral values and work ethic.

After all, if there’s a young person today who’s walked 10 miles barefoot through the snow to school, it was probably on an iPhone app.

So is this the Laziest Generation? There are signs that its members benefit from lower standards. Technology has certainly made life easier. But there may also be a generation gap; the way young adults work is simply different.

Chapter 55: Integration- Part 1: Or When Sunny Gets Blue | My Southern Gothic Life

New post up on my other blog….

Here’s an excerpt and a link to the full post:

I’ve said it before, growing up in Danville, Virginia in the late 1960′s to early 1970′s was like growing up in South Africa under Apartheid.

Brown vs the Board of Education took many years to be fully implemented in the South and, as usual, I think Danville, Virginia  was one of the last cities to be desegregated.

But desegregation did finally happened in Danville- when I was in the 5th grade.

I still remember that day….Our white school was pretty much transferred en mass to a Black Middle School.  That’s how they did things then…

It was a very big day.  All our Mothers- who usually couldn’t be bothered by their children-  either took the day off from work or cut their Valium doses enough so they could take us to school.

Until this point, we had simply walked to school and they had done whatever it was they did…This level of interaction was unheard of- and frankly, unwelcome.  We were used to being left alone to work things out on our own and they were used to being, well, left alone.  But the times, they were a changing and this was the least we could all do…

Nation Down To Last Hundred Grown-Ups | The Onion

Great satirical article from “The Onion”, of course….

Please click the link at the bottom to read the entire article.

It’s worth it….

SUITLAND, MD—According to alarming new figures released Monday by the U.S. Census Bureau, the nation’s population of mature adults has been pushed to the brink of extinction, with only 104 grown-ups remaining in the country today.

The endangered demographic, which is projected to die out completely by 2060, is reportedly distinguished from other groups by numerous unique traits, including foresight, rationality, understanding of how to obtain and pay for a mortgage, personal responsibility, and the ability to enter a store without immediately purchasing whatever items they see and desire.

“Our grown-ups are disappearing at a much faster rate than we previously believed,” said Census Bureau chief Robert M. Groves, who believes the decline in responsible adults may now be irreversible. “Unfortunately, we’ve only recently noticed this terrible trend, perhaps because of this group’s unusual capacity to endure hardships with quiet dignity instead of whining loudly to draw attention to themselves.”

“If nothing is done, these wondrous individuals, with their special ability to consider the long-term consequences of their own behavior and act accordingly, will be wiped-out completely,” Groves added.

According to recent data, the grown-up population has plummeted dramatically since 1950, when a Census count found that more than 24 million Americans could both admit when they were wrong and respect a viewpoint other than their own. Today, only one in three million citizens can provide thoughtful advice to a fellow human being instead of immediately shifting the topic to their own personal issues or what they had for lunch.

Experts confirmed the mass extinction of grown-ups has coincided with the rapid expansion of other demographic groups, including people who seek medication for every problem they encounter, 33-year-olds who participate in organized kickball leagues, personal injury litigants, and parents who try to become friends with their own children.

Man Raised By Modern Parents Struggling To Adjust To Human Society

Great satirical article from “The Onion” about today’s sheltered adult/children resulting from “helicopter” parents…

This is the group I lovingly refer to as SJI’s-Slack Jawed Idiots- due to their lack of social skills resulting from overly protective parents….

Here’s a brief excerpt from the article and a link to the full story:

Sullivan reportedly has trouble navigating even the most simple situations, often becoming frustrated to the point of tears by an attempt to mail a letter at the post office, or shutting down completely when forced to have a conversation with a person he doesn’t feel comfortable with.

“Whenever David enters a social gathering, for example, he quickly becomes fearful and anxious,” Reynolds said. “He’ll back himself into a corner, rapidly consume alcohol and snack foods, avoid eye contact, and, in some cases, lash out with sarcasm in reaction to perceived threats. Within an hour, he invariably becomes spooked and flees.”

When he feels especially threatened or overwhelmed, Sullivan returns to the place where he was raised, sometimes spending an entire weekend in the habitat to which he is still best adapted. According to Reynolds it is, in many ways, the only world Sullivan understands.

“David’s lack of acculturation is particularly evident when he attempts to interact with women, even in the most innocuous of circumstances,” Reynolds said. “Most likely he was fiercely protected and coddled by the female parent during his teen years instead of gradually learning to interact with girls as a normal child of that age would.”

“Sadly, David remains so off-putting to members of the opposite sex that he will probably never procreate,” Reynolds added.
